Gangoli, Graybill, Bradley reach District 1 quarterfinals
Three Ches-Mont players reached the quarterfinals of the District 1 Class 3A Boys Tennis Singles Championships through Friday’s action.
Great Valley’s Sameer Gangoli, Downingtown West’s Brett Graybill, and Unionville’s Tristan Bradley will all play today in the quarterfinals at Healthplex.
The No. 1 seed Gangoli won his only match of the day, 6-1, 6-4, over Upper Darby’s Brandon Caban, to reach the quarterfinals. He will face Strath Haven’s Clay Gaieski, seeded eighth, after Gaieski beat Conestoga’s Ahned Aboseada, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) in the quarterfinals.
Graybill, the No. 5 seed, won twice Friday to reach the quarterfinals, beating Abington’s Isaac Rockower, 6-4, 6-2, and Holy Ghost Prep’s Keegan Pietrak, 6-2, 6-3. Graybill will face Central Bucks South’s Cole Groetsch in the quarterfinals.
On the bottom of the bracket, No. 6 Bradley beat North Penn’s Frank Yanni and his own brother, Ethan Bradley, to reach the quarters.

PENN RELAYS » The Coatesville boys 4x100 relay team of Roland Miles, Eric Kirk, Dymere Miller and Artie Burgess qualified for Saturday’s Northeast 4x100 final with a time of 43.06 Friday at Franklin Field. The Red Raiders posted the sixth best time in the heats.
The Coatesville girls finished second in the Northeast 4x100 with a time of 48.17 posted by Jordyn Worthington, Porsha Miles, Sammie Miller and Arianna Eberly. They just missed catching Rush-Henrietta of New York, which posted a winning time of 47.91.
Coatesville’s Ricky Ortega finished eighth in the High School Boys Javelin Championship with a distance of 183 feet 10 inches.
West Chester Henderson’s 4x100 boys relay team of Colin Leonard, Robert Grove, Aaron Newell and Kavond Jones posted a strong time of 43.76 in their heat. DISTRICT 1 CLASS 2A SINGLES » Patrick Murphy of Octorara was ousted in the first round, 6-1, 6-4, by No. 4 Adam Dockery of Upper Perkiomen, as the tournament kicked off. Church Farm’s Angelino Gio also fell in the opening match, 6-2, 6-0, against Lower Moreland’s Caleb Burrows, who was seeded third.

DOWNINGTOWN WEST 17, TWIN VALLEY 1 » Shea Dougherty had five goals as the Whippets cruised to a nonleague victory with seven goals in the first quarter and 11 in the first half. Nick Varano had four goals, Nick Higgins had three goals and two assists, and Luke Venzie had a pair of goals. Nick Sicilia had five assists in the win, while goalie Owen Karp was forced to make just two saves. SHIPLEY 14, WESTTOWN 6 » Blake Larson had two goals and an assist but it wasn’t enough for the Moose in a Friends School League loss. Westtown trailed just 4-2 at the half, but Shipley poured in eight goals in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Softball
AVON GROVE 10, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 4 » Olivia Kunistsky and Ally Wallauer had three hits each as the Red Devils scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take control of the Ches-Mont contest. Wallauer had three RBI, including a triple, while Lexi Barnhart had two RBI for Avon Grove.
Rachel Butler got the win in the circle with five innings of work, including 10 strikeouts and just one walk.
Baseball
UNIONVILLE 8, SUN VALLEY 2» Kyle Lyons, Joe Zubillaga and Alex Pellegrin had two RBI each as the Indians rolled to the win. Lyons had a double and a triple for Unionville, while Theron Schilling had three hits, including a triple of his own. Zack Kennedy went the distance on the mound, striking out six to earn the win. GERMANTOWN FRIENDS 5, WESTTOWN 4 » Jon Moldoff had two doubles and Cianan Gamble added another, but it was Germantown Friends that pulled out the win in the bottom of the seventh inning in the Friends League contest.
