Gangoli wins district tennis singles title

Great Valley standout handles Wissahicko­n’s Tran in final

Great Valley High School’s Sameer Gangoli defeated Wissahicko­n’s Andrew Tran, 6-1, 6-2, in the District 1 AAA boys’ tennis singles championsh­ip final Saturday to capture the singles title.

Gangoli and Tran will be competing in the PIAA Class AAA state singles tournament in Hershey later this month. Gangoli, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, defeated fourth seed Cole Groetsch of Central Bucks South, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals to advance to the championsh­ip round. Tran, the second seed, defeated No. 3 seed Dan Kleibhan of Council Rock North, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals to advance.

In the fifth-place singles match, Unionville’s Tristan Bradley defeated Strath Haven.

The Unionville duo of Ethan Bradley and Victor Li finished in second place in the District 1 AAA doubles tournament, and will advance to the PIAA state tournament.

The Great Valley tandem of Nikhil Gangoli and Sam Kesti won the fifthplace match, 6-1, 6-2, in the PIAA District 1 AAA doubles tournament, and will move on to the PIAA Class AAA state doubles tournament later this month in Hershey.

day evening, the Whippets’ Shea Dougherty scored his 100th career goal, and finished with five goals for the game.

» The Indians (17-1, 12-0), who recently won the ChesMont League title, defeated the Raiders, led by Emma Malone (two goals, one assist), Annie McDonough (two goals, one assist), Erin Garvey (two goals, three assists), Veronica Hineman (one goal, one assist), Shannon Garvey (three goals, one assist), Mauria Blair (one goal), Lily Dietrich (one goal), Madison Holt (one goal) and goalie Madison Doucette (12 saves).

FRIENDS’ CENTRAL 15, WESTTOWN 3 » In this contest that ended after five innings, the Moose trailed 9-3 by the end of three innings. Jon Moldoff cracked two doubles for Westtown (11-7)

College Softball

WEST CHESTER 4, LOCK HAVEN0» The Golden Rams (43-13) won the Atlantic Regional 1 championsh­ip final, after defeating Lock Haven 4-0. West Chester entered play needing just one win to take the championsh­ip, while Lock Haven (38-14) needed to win twice in order to collect some hardware and eliminate the topseeded Golden Rams.

WCU pitcher Amanda Houck fired a three-hit shutout, forcing a lot of weak contact resulting in pop outs and foul pop outs throughout the day to keep Lock Haven in check. In the third inning, West Chester got a two-run double from Bri Garber and a towering two-run home run from Madison Kelly to give West Chester a commanding 4-0 lead. This victory sends West Chester back to the Super Regionals for the second year in a

row and the fourth time in team history. This is also the third time in team history that the Golden Rams will host the Super Regionals. MT. ST. MARY’S 1, IMMACULATA 0 » The historic season for the Mighty Macs (28-16) team came to an end on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Rochester Regional with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mount St. Mary’s (NY) (21-15) in an eliminatio­n game.

The loss marks the end of the season for the Mighty Macs in which they claimed their first conference crown in program history and went to their first NCAA Tournament ever. The Mighty Macs struggled offensivel­y as they were unable to get anything going, and mustered one hit off the bat of sophomore Emily Mesey, who led off the seventh with a bloop single to center field, but was stranded as the next three players made outs.

Immaculata freshman pitcher Emma Bischoff gave up only four hits and one run in seven innings, striking out five hitters on the game.

Adult Softball

WEST CHESTER ADULT SOFTBALL LEAGUE » The Crawdads defeated Red Men, 12-3. Leadoff hitter Justin Lamborn doubled and later scored to give the Dads a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kyle “Herbie” Orensky, who ended the day with two hits and two RBI of his own, scored on Wayne Pritchett-Watson’s double in the top of the second, boosting the Dads’ lead to 2-0. Dave Slusser’s three-run double in the top of the sixth frame capped the Crawdads’ overall tally at 12. Winning pitcher Bob Kuehn went the distance on the mound, yielding only four hits while striking out 12. Brendan Reilly ripped a triple and scored two of the Red Men’s three runs.

The other WCABL on the schedule Saturday, Top Lumber vs. The Jays, has been postponed until June 2 at 4:30 p.m. at Farley Field at Hoopes Park.
