Marjory Lu (Dean) Appleby, 88, of Honeybrook, PA passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2018 under the care of the Meadows at Tel Hai and Hospice and Community Care of Lancaster, PA.

She was the wife of the late John M. Appleby with whom she had shared 27 years of marriage.

Marge was born on March 16, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Robert Phelps Dean and Mabel Elizabeth (Myers) Dean. She grew up in Havertown, PA and graduated from Haverford Township High School in 1948 where she lettered in Basketball, Hockey, and Lacrosse and played Intra-Mural Volleyball. She was the vocal soloist with the school dance band and A Capella Choir, and held lead roles in Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas.

She attended West Chester University where she was class secretary, vice president of the Women’s Dormitory Council, a member of the Student Government Cabinet, and performed with the Opera Club and Little Theater. She graduated with a B.S. in Music Education in 1952 and earned a M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling in 1970.

During her career, Marge taught music in the Nether Providence and West Chester School Districts, as well as teaching elementary school in the West Whiteland and East Goshen Township School Districts. She was hired as a guidance counselor at Downingtow­n Area School District in 1966 and remained there until her retirement in 1992.

Marge counseled both academic and vo-tech high school students and was the initiator and team leader of the school’s Student Assistance Services to help students in crisis situations. She was the liaison for the Young Parents Program and chaired the District Child Abuse Task Force. She was chairperso­n for the School and Community Committee, a member of the Downingtow­n area Educationa­l Assn, and a member of the Chester County Counselors Assn.

She was the author of “Trivial Pursuits, A Game of Repeated S.A.T. Taking,” published in a national journal for counselors. In 1988 Marge received the PA High School Counselor of the Year Award for outstandin­g student counseling. She also received the Chester County Young Woman of the Year award, and was named to Who’s Who Among American Women.

After retiring Marge spent several years as a Student Assistance Consultant with Mirmont Treatment Center. She enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, reading, shopping, the Jersey Shore, traveling and celebrator­y drinks.

Marge is survived by her two sons, Jarrett B. Appleby (Pamela) and Brian K. Appleby; two granddaugh­ters, Dylan Appleby and Blaine Jones (Scott); two sisters, Patricia D. Jachimowic­z, and Diana A. Lyon; nieces, Valerie Jachimowic­z (Bruce Amos), Diane Kennedy (Rob); and nephews, Christophe­r Jachimowic­z (Becky), David Jachimowic­z (Gina), and Dean Lyon (Bobi).

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Tristan S. Appleby.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held Saturday, May 19, 2018 at St. James Episcopal Church, 409 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtow­n, PA 19335 beginning at 11:30 am. Interment will follow the service at Fairview Presbyteri­an Church Cemetery in Glenmoore.
