Unionville, Great Valley reach state tennis semis
Unionville and Great Valley reached the PIAA Class 3A Team Tennis semifinals with wins Friday.
And they’ll have some familiar company for Saturday’s semifinals and final.
Unionville beat Erie Cathedral Prep, 3-1, and Great Valley topped Fox Chapel, 3-2, to reach Saturday’s semifinals.
The Indians will face Council Rock North in the early semifinal at Hershey Racquet Club (8:30 a.m.), while the Patriots meet Lower Merion in the other semi. The winners will meet at 3:30 for the title.
Unionville swept the doubles matches thanks to wins by the team of Daniel Hopping and Zack Sokoloff (4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6-1)) and the duo of Clay Horowitz and Ethan Fitzsimons (6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6-4)).
Victor Li won a tough match at third singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 for the clinching point. Tristan Bradley’s match at No. 1 singles went unfinished.
Great Valley won tough matches at second and third singles and first doubles to clinch its quarterfinal. Sam Kesti won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Nikhil Gangoli cane back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 at third singles, and the doubles team of Amish Saini and Ryan Hamel fought out a three-set win, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
Lower Merion beat Conestoga in the other quarterfinal.

MERCYHURST 3, WEST CHESTER 2 » Top-seeded WCU blew a 2-0 lead through eight innings to drop its first round game of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Owls Field in West Lawn. The 19th ranked Golden Rams surrendered three runs in the top of the ninth to No. 24 Mercyhurst.
The loss was the West Chester’s third straight and drops the Rams into the consolation round to face second-seeded Millesville on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Now 35-16 overall, West Chester got two hits each from Jared Malone and Nick Ward. Starting pitcher Jon Fisher held the Lakers scoreless through 7.2 innings and logged four strikeouts on the day. Andrew Scarpelli was saddled with the loss after allowing three earned runs twothirds of an inning pitched.
