Shanahan’s Miller throws another playoff no-hitter

Bishop Shanahan pitcher Devon Miller threw her second no-hitter of the District 1 softball playoffs as the second-seeded Eagles defeated No. 10 Upper Merion, 100, Wednesday, in the second round of the District 1 Class 5A playoffs. Miller yielded only two walks and struck out 13 betters. She got batting support from Emily Sano (3for-3, three RBI) and Hanna Keiper (3-for-3, three RBI), whiule teammates Casey McCalliste­r and Lexis Peterson each cracked a double. CONESTOGA 2, UPPER DARBY 1 » Jenny Noll’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Pioneers (16-5) the victory in the second round of the PIAA District 1 6A playoffs. Conestoga’s Lauren Lofland threw a complete-game fivehitter, allowing no walks. COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5, AVON GROVE 4» Despite outhitting CR North 137, the host Red Devils lost in 10 innings (internatio­nal tiebreaker). For Avon Grove, Allyson Wallauer and Lexi Barnhart each had three hits, Olivia Kunitsky scored two runs, Carly Raymond and Sydney Skrzypiec each had two hits, and pitcher Rachel Butler struck out 13 batters. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 9, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2 » For the Whippets, Natalie Beebe threw a completega­me four-hitter, striking out nine as West won this second round contest in the PIAA District 1 6A playoffs. Beebe also batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI’s. Other batting standouts were Hannah Greider (triple, two runs scored, two RBI’s) and Cait Coker (2-for-3, two runs).

WEST CHESTER HENDERSON PENNCREST 3 » The No. 8 seed Warriors relied on solid hitting by Evan Spano (2-for-4, two RBIs), Ian Tracy (two hits, one run, one RBI) and Casey Caulfield (two RBIs) to come out on top in the second round of the PIAA District 1 5A playoffs. Winning pitcher Justen Lucas allowed no earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5, OXFORD 1 » The No. 6 seed host Hornets lost to 11th seeded Council Rock North in the second round of the PIAA District 1 6A playoffs. The Hornets garned only one hit, a double by Hunter Hall. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 3, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 2 » The No. 3 seed Whippets got a fine pitching effort from winning hurler Drew Britt (five hits, eight strikeouts) in this PIAA District 1 6A second-round playoff contest, and batting support from Andrew Ciliberto (2-for-3, home run), Evan Williams (1-for-2, run scored) and Britt (1-for-2, one RBI). The only runs Britt gave up came from a two-run homer by Brock Helverson in the sixth. MARPLE NEWTOWN 9, KENNETT 8 » Marple Newtown’s Luke Zimmerman smashed a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift No. 3 Marple over 11thseeded Kennett. Marple erased a 8-4 deficit with a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Merrone had a triple, and Andrew Cantwell smacked his first homer of the season.
