‘Blockers’ not just another filthy teen farce

- By Amy Longsdorf For Digital First Media

Don’t write off “Blockers” because — surprise, surprise — the movie boasts a core of sweetness which perfectly balances all of the sex talk.

In addition to being a wild, prom-night comedy, it’s also about the plight of three parents (John Cena, Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz) as they try to preserve the virginity of their daughters (Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon). Debuting director Kay Cannon deserves a lot of credit for turning what could have been a stereotypical gross-out comedy into something richer and more endearing. On Amazon, Google, iTunes, Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

Also New to VOD and Streaming

Acrimony: With his latest, Tyler Perry initially seems to be going for a serious dissection of the unhappy marriage between a hardworking woman (Taraji P. Henson) and her spendthrift spouse (Lyriq Bent). But the third act amps up the melodrama to such a degree it makes “Fatal Attraction” look subtle by comparison. In other words, it’s a hot mess. Perry is on to something with his unvarnished look at a couple in crisis, but in the end he can’t make up his mind who we should root for, and that sinks this scattershot saga. On Amazon, Google, iTunes, Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

The Endless: The latest from the filmmakers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (“Spring”) is a trippy sci-fi adventure that gets a boost from its likeable lead characters and bracingly unusual premise. The directors star as two brothers who are drawn back to the UFO death cult they abandoned years earlier. As they argue about whether or not to stay in Camp Arcadia, they discover the presence of something that uses time and space “as a horsewhip,” creating loops which are impossible to escape. Moorhead and Benson do the slow-burn thing to perfection, creating an atmosphere of dread that’s downright terrifying. On Amazon, Google, iTunes, Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

Spinning Man: After a 17-year-old cheerleader goes missing, all evidence seems to point to a philandering philosophy professor (Guy Pearce). But is he to blame? Until its disappointing finale, “Spinning Man” does a good job of using the ongoing mystery as a lens to examine the professor’s shaky marriage to his weary wife (Minnie Driver). After a while though, the film’s vagueness begins to feel less like a choice and more like inept storytelling. On Amazon, Google, iTunes, Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

Play The Devil: Set in the Bahamas, this intriguing drama is something of a cautionary tale about the dangers of living a closeted life. Greg (Petrice Jones) is a high school senior who bonds with a rich businessman named James (Gareth Jenkins.) But while James is comfortable with his sexuality, Greg doesn’t know how to handle his feelings. Director Maria Govan draws rich performances from her actors, but where she really excels is capturing the atmosphere of an island seemingly caught between the past and the future. On Amazon, Google, iTunes, Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

Glow — Season 2: The hit series about the lives of the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling is back, and the trailer seems to hint that there’s even more drama this time around. There’s plenty of tension between the characters played by Allison Brie and Betty Gilpin, as well as lots of weirdness involving over-enthusiastic fans and slimy TV execs. The entire cast returns, including Marc Maron. On Netflix.

Ibiza: Underrated actress Gillian Jacobs stars as a hard-working exec who is sent to Spain for an important work meeting. Against her better judgment, she allows her hard-partying friends (Vanessa Bayer, Phoebe Robinson) to tag along and soon they’re convincing her the time is right to pursue a fling with a famous DJ. On Netflix.

Rather than let the gang bangers triumph, Pierce once again makes uses of his power to harness electricity. On Amazon, Google, iTunes, Movies Anywhere and Vudu.

The Swap: In this entertaining Disney Original Movie, two teens — Ellie (Peyton List) and Jack (Jacob Betrand) — wind up switching bodies.
