CALN » Another Wawa is opening Thursday in the Thorndale section of Caln Township.

The Wawa, at the corner of Route 340 (Marshallton-Thorndale Road) and Business Route 30, is at 3710 Lincoln Highway. Officials had previously announced the tentative scheduled opening as the late spring, but it was changed to the summer. The 5,051 square feet store was built on property that had been the site of a car wash and a Pizza Box. It is near the Wawa at 3025 Lincoln Highway.

“In general, we are continuing to expand and invest in Chester County,” Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce said. “We currently have 22 fuel stores and 7 non-fuel stores with five potential sites.”

Doors open at 8 a.m. and a ribbon cutting will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday. In celebrating the grand opening, free Wawa coffee will be offered to customers through Aug. 12 at that location. The grand opening will also feature a Goose Pride Parade, showcasing key lessons that guide Wawa’s culture.

Wawa also recently opened a location at Reeceville and Fisherville roads, near the Brandywine Hospital in Caln Township.

“We are very pleased and appreciative of the support from the community near Brandywine Hospital and feel confident in the Marshallton Thorndale location,” Bruce said. “We look forward to growing in Chester County and reinvesting through rebuilding our legacy stores.”

Bruce explained that when looking at potential new sites, Wawa officials take a number of factors into consideration, including traffic and housing, when considering store locations and longterm market opportunities.

“At Wawa, when we open a new store, we celebrate our commitment to not only fulfill lives with our fresh food and beverages, latest store designs, and expanded offerings, but also our commitment to the community and our new neighbors,” Wawa Director of Store Operations Marc Maiolino said in a statement. “We are also proud that we provide that special atmosphere where people hold the door for one another, create lasting memories and go from acquaintances to become friends and neighbors. We’re thrilled to celebrate this grand opening and highlight our commitment to our new communities with fun celebrations, charitable donations, and thousands of moments all for the ‘neighbor good.’”

To honor the bravery of first responders and their commitment to their communities, the grand opening event will conclude with a “Hoagies for Heroes,” which is a hoagie building competition where the Caln Township Police Department and the Thorndale Fire Company will face off to see who can build the most hoagies in three minutes in the traditional Wawa way. Wawa will conclude the Hoagies for Heroes competitions by presenting checks on behalf of the winning and runner up teams, for $1,000 to the charities of their choice.

Additionally, through each of the grand opening celebrations this year, Wawa will donate a total of $100,000 to its national charity partners and charities selected by local police, firefighters and emergency responders, as a result of its Hoagies for Heroes hoagie-building competition.
