Cavalcade of Bands set for Downingtown Sept. 29
DOWNINGTOWN » Downingtown Music Parents Association is hosting the Cavalcade of Bands marching band competition at Kottmeyer Stadium on Saturday night, Sept. 29. Nearly a dozen bands will perform to earn regional recognition for excellence in musical performance, marching precision, flag-guard performance and drumline.
In addition to the competition among some of the top area high schools marching bands, Boston University and University of Massachusetts will execute their elite college-level performances for the enjoyment of the audience.
As hosts of the Downingtown Cavalcade of Bands, East and West High School bands will perform as exhibitors to showcase their 2018 marching band halftime show. Every school’s halftime performance highlights precision movement and musical talent as over 100 students in each band work together to execute intricate marching patterns while playing challenging musical numbers.
“As a relatively new member of the Downingtown music program I continue to be impressed with the level of energy and support the music program receives from community,” said Andrew German, East High School band director. “As the ‘Blue & Gold’ program enters its 90th season, there is clearly a pride and respect in the Band program that transcends generations. Whether the East and West campuses are combined in a parade, or the two bands meet each other at competitions, we are proud to serve as representatives of the greater Downingtown community and our program’s rich history.”
A family-friendly event, the concession stand will be open during the Cavalcade. Serving hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, snacks, and drinks, the proceeds designated to support the Music Parents Association (MPA). “The Cavalcade of Bands is one of the MPA’s biggest fund raising events every year,” said MPA President, Frank Chindemi. “The funds generated through this event and concessions sales during the football season turn right back around to help support the music programs (band/orchestra/chorus) from all three high schools (West/ East/STEM).” Chindemi continues, “Over the years, we have been able to purchase uniforms and risers for the choral program, repair or replace instruments for band and orchestra students, and provide some music-related educational opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise. In addition to being a community event, the Cavalcade is a key fundraiser for the MPA.”
Research shows the importance of music education for cognitive and social development, it’s no wonder Downingtown continues to provide its support to the music programs. When School Board budget cuts have unfortunately occurred, the Music Parents Association has tried to fill the financial gap as much as possible.
