PARKESBURG >> The Parkesburg Point Youth Center celebrated its 15th anniversary Thursday evening with the grand opening of its new Student Development Center.

Community members and local officials came out to the Point to see the new facilities at the Student Development Center, which include: A chapel; an academic enrichment center with smart classroom technology; a fitness center with a boxing ring; and a hands-on training center for woodworking and electrical supply. The Student Development Center is located in the building adjacent to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

After-school programs at the Student Development Center will be running Monday through Thursday.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman, D-19, congratulated members of the Point on its 15th anniversary, and noted that last year the Senate set aside $50,000 in funding for the education and youth programs. He said he plans to seek a commitment of another $55,000 going forward.

Dinniman said it’s important to treat young people in need with hope and dignity, and that youth development programs such as those offered by the Point are vital to helping young people succeed, especially those who may be im-

poverished or dealing with trauma.

He also noted that the state is giving $60 million to schools for school safety. Dinniman said the Octorara Area School District would be getting safety doors, and he suggests some of the money should be used for mental health programs.

Dinniman presented Point Executive Director Dwayne Walton and board President Dr. James Holt with a proclamation from the state Senate congratulating the Point on its 15year anniversary.

The Point is also set to host a visit by Eagles Super Bowl Champion Jordan Hicks on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Hicks will speak about his experiences as a professional athlete and a man of faith.
