W.C. East’s Kim goes low to lead at districts

West Chester East’s Victoria Kim fired a 3-under-par round of 68 Monday at Gilbertsvi­lle to take a two-shot lead into the second day of the District 1 Girls Golf Championsh­ips. Day 2 is slated for Tuesday at Turtle Creek.

Unionville’s Charlotte Scully shot a 1-under-par round to tie for second, while Conestoga’s Samatha Yao (even par) is fifth, and Downingtow­n East’s Liddie McCook is tied with West’s Lily Byrne in seventh place at plus-five.

Downingtow­n East’s Ava O’Sullivan (plus-nine) is tied for 12th, while West Chester East’s Sofia Amoroso and Downingtow­n East’s Anisha Sonti (plus-10) just made the cut for round two.

Boys Golf

DISTRICT 1 CHAMPIONSH­IPS >> On a day when five players shot under par at Turtle Creek — none from Chester County — 10 local players will move on to Day 2, slated for today back at Turtle Creek. Unionville’s Will Bennink and Richie Kline join Conestoga’s Kemp Bassett in a seven-way tie for eighth place after 1-over-par rounds of 73.

Also qualifying for day 2 were Unionville’s Roy Anderson (plus-2), Conestoga’s Morgan Lofland (plusthree), West Chester East’s Cole Shew (plus-four) and four players who snuck in a massive tie for 30th place (plusfive): Unionville’s Connor Bennink and Chris Skean, Rustin’s Ryan D’Ariano, and Downingtow­n East’s Matt Walsh.

Girls Volleyball

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 3, KENNETT 2 >> Audrey Jones had 18 kills, four blocks and two aces as Downigntow­n West scrapped its way to a Ches-Mont League win over Kennett.

Hailey Lewis had 11 kills and Aly Reardon had eight kills, 18 digs and four aces for West. Jenna Schuda had 18 assists and four aces, Lily Kendall had 15 assists, and Lea Filidore had 24 digs.

Zoe Nguyen led Kennett with 13 kills and a block. Logan May had

nine kills and two blocks and Savannah Applegate had eight kills and one block. Alex Seel had 29 assists and four kills.

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 3, MERION MERCY 0>> Victoria Rudolph had 11 kills in the Cougars’ nonleague win. Jess Angeline had two aces, 25 assists, two kills and a block. Jordan Musantry had 12 digs and an assist for East (140), which has a date with unbeaten Bishop Shanahan Thursday night.

Girls Soccer

BISHOP SHANAHAN 8, CHICHESTER 0 >> Alaina McLaughlin had three goals and two assists. Julia Repetto and Loryn Walker each chipped in two goals a piece and Anna McDonald had a goal and an assist. Rebecca Richard and Hannah Willis each had two assists and Emily Longenderf­er added an assist. Jess Gorr and Allison Blumenthal combined for the clean sheet.

Girls Tennis

OXFORD 5, OCTORARA 2 >> Mary Combs pulled out a 7-4 tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles after splitting sets, 4-6, 7-5, to lead the Hornets to the nonleague win. Karina Dash had a straight set win in singles, while Oxford swept the doubles, including wins by Hannah Bartlett and Final Pilaitis, as well as Katherin Anderson and Sarah Bartlett.

Field Hockey

OXFORD 3, COATESVILL­E 1 >> Reese Canaday scored all three goals, unassisted, as the Hornets piled up 20 shots and 11 corners. Brooke Rush and Sam Loftus had big games in the midfield for Oxford. Alyssa Watterson had the lone Coatesvill­e goal. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 5, STRATH HAVEN 1 >> Gianna Cugino had three goals and Olivia Griffith and Ella Fulling had one each in the nonleague win. Abby Martine had two saves for Henderson in goal. KENNETT 7, POPE JOHN PAUL 1 >> Sydney Thureen and Steph Oleykowski had two goals each as the Blue Demons rolled to the nonleague win. Meri Krieger, Devon Johnson and Jenna Davidson scored the other goals, while Emma Schwarz had three assists for Kennett (4-4, 8-6).
