Unionville, 4 other Chesco teams, reach tennis quarters

Unionville was part of a Chester County surge into the quarterfin­als of the District 1 Class 3A Girls Tennis Team Championsh­ips on Tuesday.

Unionville blanked West Chester Rustin, 5-0, and will be joined in the quarterfin­als by West Chester Henderson, Downingtow­n West, Conestoga and Downingtow­n East. For the Indians, at first doubles, senior Bailey Santaguida and her partner Faith Ilgner, a freshman, prevailed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rustin’s Abby Kane and Anna Hedstrom. Eliza Wilks, also a senior, won at third singles 6-0 6-0.

Unionville will host No. 6 Radnor in Thursday’s quarterfin­als. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 4, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1 >> Jessica Liu and Ella Tunnell won singles matches to lead the fourth-seeded Warriors to the win in the District 1 Class 3A Team Tournament. Both doubles teams won for Henderson, with Lauren Knopp and Olivia Zortetic winning 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles, and Nancy McSwain and Nava Boswell victorious, 6-0, 6-0, at second doubles. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 4, SPRING-FORD 1 >> Jordan Bradley, Holly Koons and Sophia Koons swept the singles matches as the Whippets cruised into the second round of the District 1 Class 3A Team Tournament. The doubles team of Lily Shin and Divya Kalmady won at first singles for the fifth-seeded Whippets, who will travel to No. 4 West Chester Henderson in the quarterfin­als on Thursday.

OXFORD 1, SUN VALLEY 0 >> Sophomore Zoller Gray scored the game’s only goal in a Ches-Mont League win over the Vanguards. GREAT VALLEY 1, AVON GROVE 1>> Sean Schusko scored for the Patriots and Graviel Sanchez found the net for Avon Grove in the Ches-Mont League draw. Great Valley had a big chance to win the game late in regulation, but Avon Grove goalie CJ Dixon turned away back to back shots from point blank range to preserve the draw. UNIONVILLE 6, BISHOP SHANAHAN 0 >> Michael Hewes scored twice and Tommy Kelly, Kyle Ketterer, Sam Price and Kyle Lyons also found the net for the Indians. Three Unionville goalies — Alex Dolce, Jack Murray and Jack Regenye — combined for the shutout with five total saves.

GREAT VALLEY 2, AVON GROVE 1>> Sarah Merriweath­er scored off a free kick in the first half. Kelly Sullivan scored off a cross by Gillian Yonce in the second half of the Ches-Mont League win for the Patriots.

OXFORD 6, SUN VALLEY 0 >> Reese Canaday had two goals as the Hornets rolled to the Ches-Mont League win. Haley Snowden, Sydney Campbell, Sandra Leon and Alyssa Beauregard also scored for Oxfor. Julia Gunzel had a strong game in the midfield for Oxford. GREAT VALLEY 4, AVON GROVE 0>> Alex Thomas, Mackenzie Hilditch, Katie Podell and Tessa Liberatosc­oli all scored for the Patriots in the ChesMont win. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 6, KENNETT 2 >> Julianna Smyth had three goals and an assist and Anna Miller added two goals for the Whippets in the Ches-Mont win. Celina Riccardo added the other goal for West, while Kari Schmidt and Claudia Jasczyak each had an assist. Sophie Ruggio and Devon Johnson scored the goals for Kennett. CONESTOGA 15, UPPER DARBY 0>> Charlotte de Vries scored four goals and Hayley Pechin netted her first two career goals and an assist as Conestoga defeated Upper Darby at Teamer Field. Carly Hynd tallied four assists and Jess Mullin and Chloe Ziegler each scored twice for the Pioneers in the Central League matchup. ACADEMY OF THE NEW CHURCH 1, WESTTOWN 0 >> Westtown goalie Sloan Isen had nine saves, but it wasn’t enough in the nonleague loss to ANC. Westtown fell to 3-4 with the loss.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 3, WEST CHESTER EAST 0 >> Reilly Ragni had five kills and an ace in the losing effort for East, 25-14, 25-9, 25-14.

Sun Valley 3, Oxford 0 >> Emily Griffin had six kills and nine digs and Danielle Stackhouse had 20 digs in the Ches-Mont loss for Oxford, 25-12, 25-14, 26-24. GREAT VALLEY 3, AVON GROVE 0>> Joy Chen led defensivel­y, Karlee Ray had three aces, and Lindsay Gal and Sarah Karwoski had 10 kills each in the Ches-Mont win. WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 3, SPRING-FORD 2 >> Fiona Pyfer had 20 kills and Gabi Ousey had 11 kills in the nonleague win for the Warriors, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 22-25, 1512. Gabi Whoriskey had nine kills and five blocks for Henderson, while Taylor Dale had 54 assists. VILLA MARIA 3, VILLA JOSEPH MARIE 0 >> Olivia Karkenny and Alessia Giannandre­a had seven kills each, while Kelsey Hoff had 21 assists and Alivia Orvieto had six aces in the AACA win, 25-19, 25-14, 25-17.

Boys Water Polo

GERMANTOWN ACADEMY 12, MALVERN PREP 6 >> Turnovers and missed shots doomed the Friars in the second half, as GA turned a 5-5 game at halftime into a 12-6 win. Malvern goalie Jake Caulfield made 17 saves, including 10 in the first half. Jack Cassidy had three goals and four assists for Malvern, while Brennan Robinson also scored.
