UPPER DARBY >> An Upper Darby High School student is in custody after bringing a pellet gun to school that initiated a lockdown of the building Thursday morning.

Just after 8 a.m. building administrators were notified that a gun was seen in a student’s backpack. The witness who allegedly saw the gun could not identify the student and the school was placed on lockdown.

Police were called and were able to identify the student and found a pellet gun in their possession. The student was apprehended and the lockdown was lifted before 9:30 and the school day continued as normal.

The student has not been identified.

“While everyone is safe, we understand that there are students and parents who are shaken as a result of this morning’s lockdown,” Upper Darby Acting Superintendent Dan McGarry said in a statement released around 10 a.m.

Initially, the district allowed students to be dismissed to their parents if they did not wish to stay for the remainder of the day. The entire school was eventually given an 11 a.m. early dismissal.

“I am sorry for the anxiety caused by this morning’s situation and appreciate your support as we always keep our children’s safety as our top priority,” said McGarry.

The Delaware County Intermediate Unit’s crisis team were brought in to assist students after the lockdown. Other resources were available to students even after the early dismissal.
