Henderson swimmers beat Rustin in season opener

The West Chester Henderson swimmers twice defeated West Chester Rustin in their season opener Wednesday, with the Warrior boys winning 100-86 and the Henderson girls winning 105-76.

For the boys, solid performanc­es for Henderson were turned in by Dylan Smolders (200 IM, 2:00.85) and 500 free (5:00.06), Tie Manuel (100 free, 52.44; and 100 back, 57.06), PJ Cronauer (200 free and 500 free), Noah Carnuccio (50 and 100 free) and Will Merrill (diving). For Rustin, Alec Pirone won diving (301.90), David Bussard won the 200 free (1:56.13), Colin Breiner the 50 free (23.28) and 100 breaststro­ke (106.92) and Nick Lutcavage the 100 fly (54.87).

Henderson girls winners included Courtney Marlin (200 free, 1:55.12; and 100 fly, 57.36), Krista Marlin (200 IM, 2:08.23; and 100 breaststro­ke, 1:08.29), Katie Simpson (50 free, 25.65; and 100 free, 56.15), Lili Horenkamp (diving, 250.75), Rylee Kelly (500 free, 5:27.20) and Julia Li (100 back, 1:03.54). Performing well for Rustin were Erin Koczur, Tara Brosnan, and Grace Ibach.

Wrestling

WEST CHESTER EAST 38, ARCHBISHOP RYAN 36 >> The Vikings picked up five falls en route to victory, by Andrew Luke (126 pounds), Corey Celenza (a 17-second pin at 132), Sean Mackin (182), Andrew DiBernardo (a 23-second pin at 195) and Hugh LemmonKish­i (285). Dan Clifford won by technical fall at 160, and Syncere Cooper won by a 6-4 decision at 220.

Boys Basketball

AVON GROVE 49, INTERBORO 23 >> The visiting Red Devils earned a nonleague victory, and were led by Bryson Morgan (15 points, including a trio of treys), Dan Greenjak (10 points) and Ayden Violette (seven points).

Girls’ Basketball

PERKIOMEN 42, COLLEGIUM CHARTER 15 >> Perkiomen pulled out to a 20-1 lead in the first half en route to victory. Collegium was led by Cheyenne Rivas, who scored 11 points.

Women’s Soccer

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST GRAD MAKES ALL-ECAC >> Downingtow­n East High School graduate Madison Baxter, a junior on the West Chester University women’s soccer team, made the 2018 ECAC Division II Women’s Soccer All-Star Team, one of three players on the Golden Rams’ squad chosen for first team honors. Baxter led West Chester University this fall in both goals scored (nine) and points (23) while placing ninth in the Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in goals and sixth in points. She was the Golden Rams’ scoring threat up top on offense all season long. The other two Golden Rams to be chosen to AllECAC women’s soccer first team were junior Jenny Ball and senior Julia Kirkpatric­k.

College Football

LINCLON QUARTERBAC­K NAMED FCS BOWL MVP >> Lincoln University senior quarterbac­k Vincent Espinoza, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead his American team to a 38-37 come-from-behind win in Sunday’s FCS Bowl played in Daytona Beach, Fla, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Espinoza led the American team back from a 37-23 deficit with 3:20 remaining in the game, completing four passes for 75 yards to pull the American team to make the score 30-23, and after his squad recovered an on-side kick with 1:14 left, Espinoza engineered the final drive, finishing it with a 14-yard run for a touchdown as time expired. He then completed a game-winning two-point conversion pass to Prince Gray (Jacksonvil­le) for the win. Espinoza’s MVP award marks the second consecutiv­e year a Lions’ football player has earned MVP honors in the FCS Bowl game, as Lincoln running back Ramses Owens took home the MVP plaque following the 2017 game. In another all-star bowl game, Lincoln senior Rob Catchings participat­ed in the Aztec Bowl in Mexico City, and joining him was Lions’ assistant coach Samuel London, who served as one of the assistant coaches for the American team.
