Kennett, Unionville scouts brighten holidays

- By Digital First Media

For the 28th year in a row, the Girl Scouts celebrated the Holiday at a “Square and Share Dance.”

Community Service is an Integral part of the Girl Scout Experience. This holiday season, Girl Scouts from Kennett and Unionville School districts, demonstrated their commitment to this ideal through three distinct service projects.

For the 28th year in a row, the Girl Scouts, along with their parents, celebrated the Holiday at a “Square and Share Dance”. They all brought toys, clothing and Gift cards to share with the Doris Haley Prison Ministry. This Ministry provides support to the children of the residents of Chester county Correctional Facility.

Mary Clendenin led the girls and their Families in square dancing. This is Mary’s 42nd year leading the Girl Scouts for this special event. Troop 4036, from Unionville High School spent the evening wrapping the hundreds of donated toys. This traditional Girl Scout Event reflects many of the goals of the Girl Scout program including having fun with family and friends, being physically active, learning new skills, providing leadership opportunities to girls, as well as, giving generously to those in our community who are less fortunate.

The Second Community Service project challenged Girl Scout Troops to provide Christmas to entire families from the local community. These families were vetted by the Department of Health as those in greatest need of assistance. The Girls, as a team, do the shopping, wrapping presents etc for the family based on the guidelines given to them.

The Third Community Service Project the Girl Scouts participate in is the Delaware Valley Children’s Charity. This project assigns foster children to troops who then buy and wrap presents for them.

The Brandywine Valley Girl Scout Service Unit actively provides Community Service throughout the year through our Service Unit, Troops and Individual Girl Scouts earning their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
