Radical homemaker to speak at Uptown!
Catskill Mountain resident, farmer and “radical homemaker,” Shannon Hayes will visit Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, on Feb. 19, to discuss her seventh book, “The Radical Entrepreneur: a guide to surviving and thriving in a new economywhere family, community and planet matter.”
The West Fulton, N.Y. resident and speaker, business owner and blogger, will talk about the radical homemaker philosophy, in which “men and women have chosen to make family, community, social justice and the health of the planet the governing principles of their lives,” Hayes wrote in a release.
Her first book, “Radical Homemakers,” urged men and women everywhere to make hearth and community the center of an ecologically sustainable future.
Sometimes described as the “voice of a new generation,” Hayes suggested that we all commit to “a life of self-reliance, economic independence
and community betterment.”
She promotes a life “free of corporate domination, grueling work schedules and endless hours in the car driving to soccer games and ballet lessons.”
Hayes said she is defined by the town of West Fulton,
her family and community.
“Ultimately it all comes together – balanced and quality of life in these hills,” she said during a phone interview.
Ecological sustainability, social justice, farming and community all combine for a centered life,
she said.
Hayes sells organically grown products to the public. At the onset, neighbors told her she’d have to sell to the rich. She discovered that this was not the case.
“People make an effort to afford our food,” she said. “They’re not poor and are
very committed to our farm and our community.
“And they are very skilled in the kitchen.”
The event will take place at the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, Tuesday Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Uptown!
