Sixty-two skilled nursing facilities owned by Kennett Square-based Genesis HealthCare, have been named to a list of Best Nursing Homes for 2018-2019 by U.S. News & World Report (U.S. News). More than 15,000 homes nationwide were evaluated, with 2,975 earning the designation.

In Pennsylvania, seven Genesis facilities were named — five of them in the tri-county region.

The ranking featured two categories: Overall Best Nursing Homes and Short-Stay Rehabilitation. The Short-Stay Rehabilitation designation was a new category for the 2018-2019 year, a category designed to provide patients with a view of the quality of care provided by nursing homes to short-stay patients in need of intensive rehabilitation or nursing services before they return home after a surgery, stroke, accident or illness, according to a press release.

It was in this new category that the majority of Genesis’ facilities were recognized. Among the locations that appear on the ShortStay Rehabilitation list are: PowerBack Rehabilitation, 3000 Balfour Circle, East Pikeland, Chester County; Pennsburg Manor, 530 Macoby St., Upper Hanover and PowerBack Rehabilitation, 3485 Davisville Road, Upper Moreland, both in Montgomery County; Naamans Creek Country Manor, 1194 Naamans Creek Road, Concord Twp. and Wayne Center, 30 West Ave., Radnor, both in Delaware County.

Also on the list were PowerBack Rehabilitation, Philadelphia and Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Scranton.

“We are proud of the 62 Genesis Centers that have been identified as one of the best skilled nursing

facilities in the country,” George V. Hager Jr., Chief Executive Officer of Genesis HealthCare, said in a press release. “Congratulations to the interdisciplinary teams at each of these centers for their commitment and dedication to quality and positive outcomes.”

Patients admitted to a skilled nursing facility for a short stay with the expectation of returning home within 100 days or less, are in need of extensive physical rehabilitation or highly specialized nursing care, according to Lori Mayer, vice president, investor relations, brand management & marketing communications for Genesis.

“This is different than the care needed by consumers who reside in a center long term and who need clinical management of chronic disease,” she said.

The U.S. News & World Report short stay ratings take into account the training level of nursing staff, the amount of physical rehabilitation the patient received and three outcomebased short stay measures, which include readmission, emergency department visits and successful return to the community, according to the company.

U.S. News relies on data from Nursing Home Compare — a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) — the federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes.

Asked what sets Genesis apart from others in the short-stay category, Mayer said the company, “generally exceeds the national average on Registered Nurse coverage, and has its own highly regarded rehabilitation company, Genesis Rehab Services, which works synergistically to get short stay patients home successfully.”

Genesis HealthCare has 33 facilities in Pennsylvania and manages another six. For more information visit www.genesishcc.com.

U.S. News & World Report offers comprehensive information about care, safety, health inspections, staffing and more for almost all nursing homes in the country.
