Red Men, Jays win in WCABL

The Red Men improved to 1010-1 on the summer and back into a tie for third place in the West Chester Adult Baseball League with a 5-3 victory over the Barnstorme­rs (6-9-1) Sunday afternoon.

The effort was led by the hot bat of Matt Samson, who went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer to break the game open in the fifth’. Kyle Laing kept the Barnstorme­rs’ offense at bay all game, going six innings and allowing just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out five. Reliever Theron Schilling worked into some trouble in the seventh, but Kyle Guers was able to put the fire out and record the save for the Tribe.

Joey Nichols led the Barnstorme­rs, going 2 for 3 with a tworun double in the seventh. Andrew Taylor took the loss for the Barnstorme­rs, allowing six hits while walking two and striking out four. A vital matchup between the Red Men and Haly Oil looms this Saturday at noon.

JAYS 4, PJ WHELIHAN’S 3 >> Wes Erdman earned a complete game victory for the Jays on Sunday over PJ Whelihan’s, tossing seven strong innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and striking out seven.

Mike Chylack led the Jays offense with two hits, including a bases-loaded single to give the Jays (9-12) a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

John Iezzi led the Prowlers’ offensive attack with a double in the fifth, and a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3. Erdman collected himself following the blast, striking out the next two batters he faced to shut down a comeback effort from PJ’s (3-13). ENGLUNDS 3, RAMCON MASONS 0 >> Englunds rode the hot bat of Ryan Ficca and the steady pitching of Hunter Curley to a victory Saturday at Hoopes Park. Curley tossed his second consecutiv­e shutout, limiting the Masons to four hits while striking out six. Ficca led the Clothiers with two hits including a two-run homer which stood up throughout the game. Ficca and Scott Stevens had excellent games on defense as well. With the win, Englunds improved to 15-2-1, holding onto first place. Ramcon fell to 5-12 with the loss. Tom Luckner and Seth Miller pitched well for the Masons, limiting Englunds to eight hits on the afternoon.

TRI-COUNTY LEAGUE PLAYOFFS >> Stottsvill­e Inn and Triple Fresh both swept their best of three first round playoff series and will begin the second round Monday. Stottsvill­e swept Coffee Cup, 2-0, and Triple Fresh swept Carlson’s Auto Body. In the second round, Triple Fresh will meet APA Tax/Abdala Insurance, while Stottsvill­e Inn will meet Road Scholar Transport.
