GYMS PUMP UP CLEANING EFFORTS

Cleaning has been “ratcheted up a little bit” at Mitch’s Market Street Gym, said Rory Musselman, gym manager.

“There is a lot more out there than coronavirus,” Musselman said. “We just have to be cognizant of that all the time.

“We are always very aware of the environment.”

Musselman’s first job at a California gym in 1984 was to clean.

“I’ve always been a real stickler about cleaning the gym all the time,” he said. “We don’t want to spread germs.”

Like other gyms in the area, members wipe down the equipment before and after working out.

“Our members are aware of the whole process of cleaning, and a clean, healthy environment,” he said.

Musselman said coronavirus is a small threat compared to a lack of exercise and inactivity that can cause diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Planet Fitness, on Wilmington Pike, reported that there has been a significant drop in the number of members working out.

As part of a website post, at acac, on McDermott Drive, extra cleaning at the gym was addressed.

“Throughout the day, every day, our team cleans the facilities, including all ‘high touch’ surfaces (doors, doorknobs, light switches, faucet handles and exercise equipment) to maintain a clean and safe environment.”

The cleaning effort has been “heightened,” and additional sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer have been added. The gym placed orders for additional tissues, sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer.

The website post also reads that all acac facilities recently participated in a clubwide “Service Day” — a thorough deep cleaning.

At acac, a certified pool operator ensures that the level of chemicals exceeds the health department’s standards. Lifeguards typically check the pool chemical balance several times per day and are now checking the chemical balance more frequently.

A post by the YMCA of Greater Brandywine reads that children in the early learning programs are washing their hands more frequently.

There is also an increased signage to build awareness and adherence to general illness prevention guidelines.

At the YMCA, swimmers should shower before using the pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam room, as well as before and after working out.

Children are to be kept home if they are showing symptoms of an illness or a temperature of 101 degrees orally or 100 degrees from the armpit. If they have had a fever, they must be feverfree for 24 hours prior to returning to the early learning center or Child Watch.
