Cash and credit cards will not be accepted on the Pennsylvania Turnpike after 8 p.m. Monday to prevent drivers from interacting with tollbooth workers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Motorists who do not have an E-ZPass account should continue to use lanes marked “tickets” or

“cash” without stopping. They will receive an invoice of the toll amount through the mail.

“This temporary measure is critical to enable us to support the commonwealth in its efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” Mark Compton, turnpike CEO officer, said in a press release.

“I want to be clear that we will return to normal toll-collection operations as soon as it becomes practical.”

The turnpike commission has not determined when cash and credit card payments will resume.

Under the turnpike’s toll-by-plate program, the registered owner of a vehicle will receive an invoice in the mail within 30 days. Invoices can be paid online, by phone or mail.

Motorists will be charged the cash toll rate. They will also be notified of the E-ZPass payment option, which provides discounts.

Motorists have 20 days to pay invoices before a second invoice is issued.

If the first invoice is not paid, the second invoice will include an additional fee of $5 or the equivalent of 1.5% of the total amount owed, whichever is higher.

As another precaution, the turnpike has closed all dining and indoor public restrooms at the Valley Forge Service Plaza, King of Prussia, Montgomery County, and Peter J.Camiel Service Plaza, Elverson, Chester County. Portable toilets are available.

Other service plaza locations and amenities along the turnpike will remain open.
