What to do when things return to normal

- Bill Rettew Small Talk

One day this pandemic will end and life will return to a new normal.

We all gotta dream. This quarantine or hibernation during the coronavirus pandemic is a real drag, but one day it will end and life will return to a new normal.

I’m not minding “seclusion” too much. I’m more socially active than ever – online and via the phone – and I’m learning a little bit about myself, as well as my likes and dislikes.

Things have changed, for sure. Regardless, the sun keeps coming up. We can see that light at the end of the tunnel.

I’m raring to go when we get the word that it’s safe to come out. And I’m ready to experience life with new eyes.

We’ll again participate in some things we’ve always done and also try new ones.

What follows is a wish list of things to do when it is safe to get out and about:

• Patronize non-essential businesses. Let’s keep every shop and restaurant open and give a boost to those employees happy who took a major hit in the pocketbook.

• Overtip. Those of us who are lucky to work through this ought to spread the joy of earning, and spending, cash.

• Temporarily put down the cell. Oh my, that is a very small screen.

• Hug, kiss and shake hands again.

• Go to high school and college Class of 2020 graduations to see what the bold and bright future looks like.

• Burn some gas. Let’s drive aimlessly, anywhere, at all times of night or day.

• Eat everything in the fridge and leave it empty.

• Almost use up that last roll of toilet paper before getting more.

• Walk past a sink and not wash our hands.

• Order sunny side up eggs (staring atcha!) and mop up the yolk with bacon at the DK Diner.

• Take a trip or two to wide open places.

• Turn off KYW and public radio. Instead, listen to the rain, wind and birds.

• Tell your mom, dad, sisters, brothers and the rest of your family, plus your friends, that you love them.

• Pick and smell a flower and then put it in a glass.

• Attend a minor league baseball game and laugh hard at all those goofy activities between innings.

• Visit museums – my favorites, the Rodin Museum and Brandywine River Museum. And then do it again. • Picnic. • Geocache and not care if you find anything.

• Go inside a fast-food joint.

• Pick an orange, apple, peach, beans, strawberries or peas. Oh yes, the farmers are still hard at work.

• Drive with all the windows open.

• Scratch our faces when they itch. I never realized how often we touch our faces.

• Attend a show at West Chester University. Many are free.
