CONFRONTING THE PANDEMIC AT A GYM
acac Fitness and Wellness Center implements new safety protocols
WEST GOSHEN » Since reopening, acac Fitness and Wellness Center is actively addressing the global pandemic.
The gym is regularly sanitizing, requiring face masks, performing mandatory medical screenings, while taking temperatures prior to entrance for members and staff, and promoting social distancing.
acac general manager Beth Carotenuto said that some gym users are “hesitant” and club visits are down to about one third of usual.
“We know that physical fitness is an important aspect in our community and we want to provide our community with a safe and clean environment to stay safe and active,” she said. “Exercise is medicine and it improves your overall fitness, which can help boost your immune system.”
On June 5, the club opened up the outdoor pool and set up a tent with exercise machines. The indoor portion of the gym opened on June 26.
acac routinely ranks in the top 5 percent of national health club cleanliness, the GM said.
“Cleaning is something we’re used to,” Carotenuto said.
“We will be enhancing our already-thorough cleaning procedures to ensure the club is sparkling clean and free of pathogens,” reads a club letter to members.
A task force has been established, while consulting state, federal and local sources.
There is no towel service or water fountains open, and every other shower stall is available. The sauna and steam room are closed.
Anybody with a temperature of 100.4 is sent home. Hand sanitizer use is required at the door and frequently during a visit.
An electrostatic disinfecting procedure was used in March when the club closed. It removes any trace of the virus, bacteria or pathogens, according to Carotenuto. EPA registered hospital grade cleaning products are now used to disinfect.
Scanners will allow members to touchlessly check-in. Credit cards, but not cash, will be accepted at the Logo Shop.
Physical distancing cues are marked in group exercise studios, locker rooms, elevators, social spaces, front desk and café areas and on the strength and cardio floors. Signs will remind members to wipe down equipment before and after use.
Rigorous mid-day cleanings and overnight deep cleaning are taking place.
The club will feature AirPHX filtering devices which the GM said are proven to kill microbes in the air and on surfaces in as little as 60 minutes.
Also available is acac On Demand, a virtual platform of live and recorded classes for members to enjoy at home.
Acac is working with their members to freeze or hold their memberships.
