Police are investigating a morning shooting at the Red Roof Inn, 49 Industrial Highway in Tinicum.

Tinicum police and EMS were alerted at 11:03 a.m. and found one victim on the second floor, shot in the legs. The man was treated and taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Tinicum Police Chief Steve Edmiston said a suspect fired an assault rifle and fled the scene. Video from neighboring hotels showed the man, identified as Stacey Woodley of Philadelphia, running with the gun and then discarding it behind the Travelodge.

“I heard about three gunshots. At first I thought they were fireworks,” said Alaicea Chisholm, an

employee of the Travelodge motel next door. “As I pulled up in the back of (room) six, I saw a couple running with their kids. They were really shaken up.”

The couple told her a man was behind them with a rifle shooting, so they asked to hide in a room. They all went into a room and waited until things quieted down.

“They were shaking,” Chisholm said.

The suspect crossed Interstate 95 just south of Route 420 where he jumped into the tidal water of Darby Creek in the William Heinz Wildlife Refuge.

Numerous police converged on the scene with long arms drawn. A broken window could be seen in a room on the second floor as investigators examined the scene.

A second group of officers, including state police, were on the on-ramps of the southbound interstate looking for the suspect in the wildlife refuge. Woodley was taken into custody there just across the highway from the hotel.

Woodley was charged with attempted homicide and related offenses.

A second victim was taken to the hospital with minor cuts from broken glass.
