Leadership qualities important this election

- Robert Gottschall West Chester

Just a few thoughts at this juncture of my life. I am a retired West Chester school teacher, having taught 34 years.

I was an official for PIAA soccer, basketball and baseball for 55 years. I coached for BYC, Chadds Ford/ Concordville, WCABL- West Chester, Fugett MSWCASD, Phelps SchoolMalvern. A good leader: • Leads by example, not by words alone. As a classroom teacher, I always maintained, at severe discipline I might add, to never, and I do mean never, in 34 years, utter a curse word with the children in my class. After three years in the Army, that, at times, was difficult to say the least.

• Chooses hes ( no, not a typo, it is my new English word for both his/ her… didn’t know I was also an inventor, did you?) words carefully to prevent making things up or needing to deny that hes said them in the first place.

• Focuses on ideas and ideals that will benefit as much as the citizenry as possible a) in the world, b) in the country, and c) in his own personal family ( including best friends and notice I am not saying “himself”).

• Uses the resources at hes disposal to learn all the facts, including, and especially, those dealing with areas that hes knows nothing about.

• Uses hes position for the betterment of all, not hes own.

• Shows compassion for those that suffer.

• Uses education to give all members of society a

“hand up”. Uses the adage “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime”.

• Doesn’t verbally abuse anyone by attacking them verbally ( name calling) and never, intentionally, goes after someone to hurt hes.

• Understands that there are usually a multitude of viewpoints on any issue and accepts the fact that simply negotiating a solution is often the best policy.

• Works within the system to better it if something is broken, fix it, but if not, let it go.

• Is generally kind and loving of hes fellow wan ( yes, woman and man!), but remains steadfast in making certain everyone is heard and allows each side to state what they believe to be right.

• Is concerned with issues that may inhibit the future of this earth. Understands that change is inevitable and proposes the best way to protect our earth.

Now, let’s evaluate these ideals with what is before us today in what will take place in November in this great country of ours. Ask yourself, what do I agree with the 12 comments above, and can the character of the person I am about to vote for fulfill these ideals of just what a leader should be. You do the compilation of which follows these basic ideals.

My future is short, but the futures of my children and, especially, my grandchildren, is definitely at stake.
