Sappey tours dog adoption center
WEST GROVE » State Rep. Christina Sappey, D- 158th, of West Bradford, was impressed following a tour of a new expanded adoption center at a Chester County nonprofit animal shelter earlier this week.
Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue Center places more than 500 animals every year, mostly dogs, and when the newadoption center is completed in a couple of months, it will provide even better care for at- risk dogs. About 90 volunteers help at Greenmore.
“I had a great time visiting and learning at Grenemore FarmAnimal Rescue,” Sappey said. “This beautiful facility provides exceptional loving care and it’s a miracle I didn’t leave with a litter of pups.”
Greenmore, established about 10 years ago, is operated by Julia Altman, founder and executive director, and her partner, Jack Merritt. It is a no- kill, non- profit, volunteer- based rescue located on a six- acre farmette off of Route 842.
Merritt said many of the dogs at Greenmore are acquired across the country. They are typically at- risk dogs, and are brought to
Greenmore’s clinic, where they are either neutered or spayed and given the necessary vaccinations. Greenmore works with a local vet for all inoculations and medical evaluations. Merritt even uses his private plane to fly out to get atrisk dogs.
“There’s such a huge need in some of these rural areas,” Merritt said.
Merritt said some people come fromlong distances to adopt dogs at the center. He met one man from Boston at the Philadelphia Airport after he flew in to adopt a dog.
The dogs are adopted mostly through web sites
like petfinder. com, adoptapet. com or greenmorerescue. org.
“It’s a labor of love,” Merritt said.
