UPS plans to make a significant dent in its seasonal employee need during its annual “Brown Friday” hiring event nationwide. The company said it expects to hire at least 50,000 seasonal employees on Friday during 250 virtual and in-person hiring events. The hiring will continue on Saturday, as well.

Among the planned events are several in the Greater Philadelphia region, including West Chester, Willow Grove, Horsham and Philadelphia, as well as Bethlehem, Carlisle and Harrisburg.

The company said it will hire thousands of candidates on the spot — part of a broader effort announced last month — to hire more than 100,000 seasonal workers to support its annual holiday shipping rush.

The full- and part-time seasonal positions include package handlers, drivers and driverhelpers. “UPS Brown Friday has become an annual tradition,” Charlene Thomas, UPS chief human resources officer, said in a press release. “For tens of thousands of Americans, it’s an opportunity to land one of the country’s best seasonal jobs, with the potential to turn into a career. Many of those who attend one of our job fairs this Friday will be hired by Monday, and many of those hired will be offered permanent jobs when the holidays are over.”

While many of the events are virtual, those being held in this region are in-person. However, if candidates would prefer a virtual experience they can take that option, the company said.

For those choosing a virtual option, they will check into a virtual lobby, then do online interviews with HR representatives from UPS.

For the in-person events, applicants will wait outside the building before being called in for an interview. The in-person events will adhere to current guidelines, including social distancing and the required use of masks.

In-person events are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31:

• Friday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for openings at the West Chester UPS facility. Event is being held at 1200 Ward Ave., West Chester. Applicants are asked to Park in the employee lot and come through the guard shack.

• Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for openings at the Willow Grove UPS facility. Event is being held at 1 Electronic Drive Horsham. Applicants are asked to park in the larger parking lot and come through POST1 entrance and up to HR.

• Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for openings at the Horsham UPS facility. Event is being held at 1 Electronic Drive Horsham. Applicants are asked to park in the larger parking lot and come through POST1 entrance and up to HR.

• Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for openings at the PHL Air hub. Event will be held at 1 Hog Island Road, Philadelphia. Applicants are asked to follow signs that direct them to the employment building — building 11.

For in-person interviews, applicants are required to have a mask, and maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet. They are asked to arrive on time and to bring a photo ID.

Over the last three years, about 35% of people hired by UPS for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired in a permanent position when the holidays were over, and about 123,000 UPS employees — nearly a third of the company’s U.S. workforce — started in seasonal positions, the company said.
