Mulhern ( again), Barnhill lead their teams to titles
Mulhern gets third straight, Barnhill his fi rst as Henderson girls, Whippet boys win
NEWTOWN » West Chester Henderson junior Jenna Mulhern did it again, and this time, with an entire minute of breathing room.
Mulhern won her third straight District 1 Class 3A Girls Cross Country championship on Monday, clocking a time of 18: 18.20 at Tyler State Park. Her time was 61 and a half seconds faster than secondplace fi nisher Claire Zubey of Owen J. Roberts.
“She’s really good,” Zubey said of Mulhern, whose teammate Liesl Scherrer helped bookend Zubey in the fi nishing order. “She took it out at the beginning. I was trying to see her the whole time.”
On the boys side, Downingtown West’s Aiden Barnhill recorded a time of 16: 21.40 to win the crown and lead the Whippets to their fourth straight team title, slipping past Downingtown East. Barnhill edged out Hatboro- Horsham’s
Devon Comber ( 16: 24.4) and Unionville’s Ethan McIntyre ( 16: 35.2). Declan Rymer ( fi fth) and Holden Betz ( 16: 50.2) were other West runners fi nishing in the top 10, Rymer fi fth and Betz ninth.
The Henderson boys were third behind the Downingtowns, getting Top 10 outings from Gavin Brophy ( sixth, 16: 48.9) and Jack Davidson ( ninth, 16: 54.9).
The team champions earned bids to states, as well as the top 13 runners on each side.
On the girls side, Mulhern and Scherrer will be joined at Saturday’s state meet by Downingtown West’s Carolyn Tarpley ( fifth) and Henderson’s Weronica Ziemniak ( eighth).
On the boys side, seven of the top 12 finishers came from the Ches- Mont League: Barnhill, McIntyre, Rymer, Brophy, Downingtown East’s Brendan Flynn ( eighth), Betz, Davidson, Great Valley’s Michael Search ( 11th) and Downingtown East’s Caiden Leen ( 12th).
The PIAA Championship are set for Saturday in Hershey, with the Class 3A girls beginning at 1 p. m. The Class 3A boys run at 2 p. m.
The race will be televised on PCN.
