PETE’S PICKS

- Peter DiGiovanni

Friday night, West Chester Rustin attempts to take home the second District 1 Class 5A championship in school history, as the second-seeded Golden Knights travel to No. 1 Upper Dublin.

W.C. RUSTIN AT UPPER DUBLIN

The two teams are very familiar to each other. Two years ago, the Cardinals defeated Rustin in a close game where the Golden Knights’ final drive was stopped at the 2-yard line as time ran out. Last year, the Golden Knights routed the Cardinals in the first round of the district playoffs and West Chester Rustin advanced, only to lose to Academy Park the following week. The two teams have played one common opponent this year, and that was Wissahickon. The Cardinals defeated the Trojans in the first game of the season with a fourth-quarter comeback, 31-27. Last Friday in the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs, the Golden Knights handled the Trojans, 48-13, in a game where junior running back Dayshawn Jacobs galloped for 258 yards, and as a team, Rustin rushed for 449 yards. The Pick: W.C. Rustin 34, Upper Dublin 24

LANSDALE CATHOLIC AT BISHOP SHANAHAN

Bishop Shanahan won its first three games, outscoring opponents, 74-14, in the process. Carson Binder and Matt Coladonato have anchored a strong Eagles defense while junior quarterback Cooper Jordan is having a very good season running the football. The Eagles’ goal in this shortened season was to go 5-0, and they have to defeat the crusaders to get to 4-0. The Pick: Bishop Shanahan 28, Lansdale Catholic 13

HAVERFORD AT CONESTOGA

Conestoga got a much-needed win against a poor Lower Merion team last week as the Pioneers garnered over 400 yards of total offense. This is a different animal, however, as Haverford is 3-0 and the Fords’ defense has allowed just three points in their first three games The Pick: Haverford 35, Conestoga 7

AVON GROVE AT SUN VALLEY

This matchup features two teams that both need a win. Avon Grove, under first-year head coach Joe Coffey, have shown a lot of fight in their four losses and the Red Devils beat a very good Unionville team two weeks ago. Sun Valley is winless and the Vanguards have had trouble scoring many points this season. The Pick: Avon Grove 28, Sun Valley 14.

ARCHBISHOP A WOOD AT MALVERN PREP (SAT.)

Wood is coming off two lopsided losses to St. Joseph’s Prep and La Salle. Malvern is undefeated and the Friars defense, led by Jake Brownley and Colton Derry, has allowed just 14 points in three games. The Pick: Malvern Prep 28, Archbishop Wood 14
