Drive-in movies are back in Exton

EXTON » There is now an old solution to a new problem at Exton Square Mall. Drive-in movies are back! And with the new movie showplace there is no need to risk exposure to COVID-19 while safely seated in the family SUV.

Not since 1985 have you been able to snuggle with your sweetie, munch on fresh popcorn and catch a movie from the friendly confines of your own vehicle in Exton.

Starting in 1956, motorists passing by on Route 100 could catch a glimpse of Hollywood movies at the Exton Drive-in, at the spot now occupied by Whiteland Town Center.

Jason Hunter, owner of Parking Lot Theaters, will show movies on the second level of a parking garage at Exton Square Mall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, starting February 12 and running through Dec. 26.

“Some people have never been to a drive-in,” Hunter said. “Kids can’t make it to movies in theaters and get restless.

“Here you can control the temperature and volume and the kids can lay down. You are in your own space but still enjoying the film.

“Everyone loves Netflix, but some people want to do something out of the home.”

Once the proper rights and equipment are secured, likely by June, the roof-top drive-in will be

hosting first run flicks.

Some of the initial presentations will be “A Star is Born,” “Blockers,” and “Surviving the Night.”

The initial cost per car will run from $32 to $50. Movie theater standards, popcorn and candy, will be available directly from the business and moviegoers will be able to order hot meals from local restaurants. Every patron will book online and park in a reserved and numbered

space, in part, to facilitate food deliveries.

“There will be no surprises, and you won’t have to say, ‘I hope I get a good spot,’” Hunter said, “and it helps us deliver the food since we can take it right to the car.”

Stargazers will be able to bring their own munchies. Hunter said there will be no “concession police.”

Currently the rooftop lot hosts 71 spaces, which will max out to 80 when some light standards, which would now block views, are removed.

“R” rated movies will sometimes be shown on a 30 by 20 foot screen since the public view will be blocked by the mall building.

Five employees will run the show. Movies will start in February at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., with separate admission for each showing. Sound will be broadcast on an FM radio and radios will be available.

Many Chester County residents appeared as “extras” at the filming of The Hooters music video, “And We Danced,” which was filmed at the then-shuttered Exton Drive-In during July 1985.
