WEST CHESTER » When the pandemic struck, personal protective equipment (PPE) was in short supply everywhere. Fortunately for the Chester County Sheriff’s Office, Security Officer Roy Kofroth possesses skills that exceed the routine diligence he displays daily at the security checkpoint of the Chester County Justice Center.

Kofroth, who owns a glass company, volunteered to construct Plexiglas shields to protect his colleagues as well as the public. The multi-talented employee also owns a karate studio, which led to his becoming the first security officer to play an integral role in the CCSO training regimen.

Kofroth conducts classes in defensive tactics, sessions that help deputies complete the office’s field training program and maintain their certifications for impact-weapons training.

Kofroth’s supervisor, Cpl. Brad DeSando, explained that these were just some of the reasons that Kofroth received the Employee of the Quarter “You Rock” award on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021. “He always exceeds expectations,” DeSando said. “I can always count on him to do more than what is required.”

The recognition, part of the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of Pennsylvania’s Businesses Backing Blue program, spotlights employees’ efforts that go above and beyond. Because such work can sometimes go unnoticed, CCSO employees are urged to be on the lookout for exemplary behavior and submit nominations.

Chester County Sheriff Fredda L. Maddox ap

plauded the choice of Kofroth, noting that in his minimal spare time, he attended the Police Academy. After graduating the academy, he submitted an application for a deputy position. During the recent hiring process, Kofroth turned out to be one of the top candidates, easily landing the job, the Sheriff said. Kofroth will

join the next set of recruits later this year.

For his commendable conduct, Kofroth received the gratitude of his supervisors, the admiration of his peers, a gift card to Pietro’s Prime restaurant in West Chester, a framed certificate, and temporary ownership of a large serpentine stone. The weighty specimen – native to Chester County – is mounted on a base that proclaims: “You Rock! Chester County Sheriff’s Office Employee Recognition Award.”
