Bergey, Straub push Whippets over Eagles

Downingtow­n West was paced by four goals from Brett Bergey and three from Michael Straub in a 9-7 Ches-Mont League boys lacrosse win over Bishop Shanahan on Thursday. West won 14 of 19 faceoffs to control possession, and is on a five-game winning streak (5-0, 7-2).

Tyler Rodriguez and Tom Venzie also scored for West. DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 14, WEST CHESTER EAST 1 » Luke Wetzel had four goals and two assists, Luke Fiorillo scored three times and Alystair Hemberger and Michael Osertag each scored twice in the Cougars’ runaway ChesMont win.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 13, GREAT VALLEY 9 >> Marek Seaman had five goals and Owen Murray had four — along with three assists — in the Golden Knights’ win over the Patriots. Antonio Santangelo had three goals for Rustin. Michael Corrigan had three goals to lead Great Valley and August Flynn had two.

Girls Lacrosse

DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 14, BISHOP SHANAHAN 8 >> Bryn Rochon led all scorers with six goals and Lainey Straub added three more for the Whippets in the Ches-Mont win. Maddie Greco had two for West. Sophia Lymberis led Shanahan with four goals, while Michelle Warren had two goals and an assist.

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 21, WEST CHESTER EAST 4 >> Hazel Gardner had five goals and Eileen Hewitt and Caroline Brennan each had four goals for East in the Ches-Mont win. Elena Mastrog, Mackenzie Haragos and Karyn Michaels each had three goals for East.

WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 6, GREAT VALLEY 4 >> Christine Ditizio had two goals and Ava Kane, Alexys McClain, Skylar Baur and Lanie McGurk also scored for the Knights in the Ches-Mont win. Ava Panetta had nine saves for Rustin. Great Valley’s four goal scorers were Noelle Albanese, Megan Corrigan, Kaitlyn Giandonato and Marlena Alleva. Sydney Manning had 13 saves.

COATESVILL­E 14, OXFORD 4 >> Kate Lilly and Alexis Reinard scored two goals each in the losing effort for the Hornets. Coatesvill­e scorers were not provided.

VILLA MARIA 17, NAZARETH ACADEMY 0 >> Margie Carden had 11 points on the day — four goals and seven assists — while Alex Touey and Maggie Traynor each scored three goals for the Hurricanes in the AACA win.

Softball

WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 7, WEST CHESTER EAST 6 >> Kayla Burleson had three hits and two RBI for the Warriors, as East’s sixth-inning comeback attempt fell one run short in the Ches-Mont League divisional showdown. Annaleise McCubbin went the distance for Henderson, striking out seven. Alison Hill and Amanda Gomez had two RBI each for East in the losing effort, with Gomez hitting a home run.

Boys Tennis

DEVON PREP 4, MALVERN PREP 3 >> Michell Bramlage and Ryan Bill won their singles matches, while the teams of Ethan Skorup and Colin McCusker, along with Patrick Dean and Brendan Thompson won doubles matches as the Tide edged the Friars in nonleague action. Malvern Prep’s Nate Kelly won at No. 3 singles, along with the doubles teams of Matt Egan and Cole Kelly and Ignacio Lorente and Maxwell Mongiello.

UNIONVILLE 7, WEST CHESTER RUSTIN 0 >> Andrew Poprik, Matt Farrell and Jack Barrickman won their singles matches for the Longhorns in the Ches-Mont win. The Unionville teams of Colin Keenan and Ryan Megill, Will Poprik and Nate Butler, Jay Param and Austin Krautzel, and Thomaz Bonato and Arnab Sircar won doubles matches.
