PowWow moves to Riverfront Park
The 7th Annual PowWow on Manatawny Creek will be held this Saturday and Sunday in a different place than in previous years.
The event, which was canceled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, will take place this year in Riverfront Park, rather than its usual location in Memorial Park.
Pandemic precautions remain in force.
Thankfully, since Riverfront Park fronts on Manatawny Creek as well as the Schuylkill River, there was no need to change the name.
Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday and the grand entry is scheduled for noon.
As in the past, the event features two days of Native American dances and crafts.
The event, which has grown in popularity over the years, is a celebration of the historic heritage and contributions that Native Americans have had in this region.
It also intends to help fund the preservation of a Native American Burial site located at the intersection of Franklin Street and Industrial Highway.
Thus, although admission is free, a $5 contribution is requested.
Barry Lee will serve as the master of ceremonies.
Matt White Eagle will be the head male dancer and Chris Mourning Dove will be the head female dancer.
There will also be performances by the Salinas Aztec Dancers.
The Medicine Horse Singers will be the “host drum,” and there will be performances by the Red Blanket Singers and the Grey Cloud Singers.
The event will also display the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Memorial, which is a silent memorial meant to bring attention to the ongoing crisis being experienced throughout Native American lands.
