The West Chester University softball team split the first two games of the best-of-three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal at Shepherd Wednesday at Sara Cree Field in Shepherdstown, W. Va. The Golden Rams held on for a win in the opener, 6-5, but fell by the score of 11-8 in the nightcap. West Chester (25-13 overall) faces Shepherd in the deciding game of the series today at 1 p.m. at Sara Cree Field.

Golden Ram fifth-year senior Bri Garber registered four hits on the afternoon to tie the PSAC all-time hits record at 310, which had been held by former Bloomsburg standout Erica Miller (19982001). Garber’s next base hit will establish her as the new all-time hits leader in conference history.

In the opener, the Golden Rams trailed 4-1 before scoring five runs in the top of the seventh, led by singles from Garber and Madison Melvin, and doubles by seniors Courtney Stump and Jamie Klemas. Senior Jen Hanshaw improved to 11-4 on the season after closing the contest.
