D-West slugs 6 HRs to edge Rustin

The Downingtow­n West softball team slugged six home runs in an 11-10 win against West Chester Rustin Wednesday. Both Meghan Sinkus (3-for-4, six RBIs) and Lizzie Kern (2-for-4) hit two home runs, while Nicole Lioumis and Mavica Mendez each slammed one round-tripper. Rustin’s offensive leaders in this slugfest were Mairead Hopkins (2-for3, two home runs, 6 RBIs), Kelly Fricker (3-for-4, two doubles, two RBIs), Paige Bentley (2-for-4) and Laney Lacey (2-for-3). AVON GROVE 8, GREAT VALLEY 2 >> The Red Devils’ Maddie Grablewski struck out 12 and only allowed three hits in a complete game win Wednesday afternoon at Avon Grove. Lauren O’Neill went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Ana DiCampli went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Cait Long went 2-for-2 with two walks. Great Valley’s Chloe Becker went 2-for-3 with a home run. COATESVILL­E 5, OXFORD 1 >> Red Raider pitcher Megan Gochenauer scattered six hits and struck out nine, while teammates Emma Friel and Caitlin Reynolds each had two hits and an RBI and Olivia Spring had a two-run double. Emily Scott and Caitlin Reynolds made several running catches in the outfield to take extra base hits away from Oxford. Ashley Flynn had two hits for Oxford.

DOWNINGTOW­N EAST 5, SUN VALLEY 3 » The visiting Cougars (10-8 overall, 9-7 ChesMont) were led by pitcher Rachael Schumann, who pitched a complete game, gave up six hits, struck out 10, walked only two, and chipped in a double and single on offense. D-East catcher Nicki Sudall was on base twice with a walk and a single, scored two runs and knocked in another. WEST CHESTER EAST 7, UNIONVILLE 1 » Winning pitcher Jess Gomez hurled a two-hitter, striking out 14 batters. Abbey McCormick led the Vikings attack, going 3-for-4 with a double. Unionville pitcher Sydney Horan also struck out 14 batters, and hit a home run.

Cougar pitcher Dylan Hanson hurled a complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out nine.

BLOOMSBURG 5, WEST CHESTER 2 » The Golden Rams lost in the quarterfin­al round of the Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference (PSAC) postseason baseball tournament Wednesday at Maple Zone Sports Village. West Chester’s Luke Cantwell hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning. West Chester starter, lefty Braeden Fausnaught pitched well in defeat, yielding only one run and four hits in 5.1 innings, striking out six. Mike Ferrara went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Golden Rams (20-11), who now look to the NCAA Division II Tournament Selection Show in 11 days to see if their 2021 campaign continues.

Boss Automotive came back from an 8-0 deficit, finishing the rally with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, to edge Goshen Beverage, 12-11, in a Brandywine Valley Senior Softball game Wednesday. Larry Riggs had the walk-off RBI single. In another Gold Division game, Brad Sheirer hit an over-the-fence threerun home run to highlight a 23-14 Carlson’s Auto Body win against Ampro Screen Printing.
