Man launches private sport coach business
WEST CHESTER » Shot and score!
A new local business wants to help young athletes realize their untapped potential.
Business owner Gene Williams is connecting soccer and basketball players, from 6 to 17 years old, and their parents, with private sports coaches.
Williams, 29, launched Athletes Untapped during August in the Tri-State, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware Area, with plans to expand.
“We want to help young athletes and provide them with better opportunities to succeed,” Williams said on Tuesday during an interview in a local coffee shop.
Athletes Untapped coaches will teach one on one, whether it’s for the super young athlete just learning the game, for the player looking to make the varsity or travel team or for experienced players seeking a college scholarship.
Williams played four years of basketball at Johns Hopkins University where he received a degree in Economics. He also played basketball professionally in Ireland for a year.
“Growing up I never had a private coach and it would have been beneficial for me to have one,” the West Chester resident said.
He worked as a private coach for about five years.
Williams talked about a former fifth grade girl’s basketball player. When she was introduced to him she couldn’t dribble lefthanded. Fast forward four years and she’s now starting on the varsity high school basketball team.
“These are the type of relationships I want to build,” he said.
Williams is constructing a platform to help thousands of coaches and athletes make a bigger impact. He wants to help coaches oversee their businesses, by finding clients and managing their schedules.
