Longhorns top Whippets for third place in 4A

In the District 1 4A third-place contest, Unionville topped ChesMont rival Downingtow­n West 3-0 in action on Thurday. As a result, the Longhorns head to the PIAA Playoffs as the third seed from the district. The Whippets (20-4 overall) are the fourth seed. The scores were 25-21, 25-15, 25-23.

Jenna Schuda had 17 assists, 14 digs and six kills to pace West. Camryn Tuffner (seven kills) and Darby Weller (six kills) also contribute­d.

Girls Tennis

Area hopefuls begin their quest for titles as the PIAA Championsh­ips begin today at the Hershey Racquet Club.

In 3A single, Grace Li of Unionville will take on District 10 champ Trinity Fox of Fairview. Henderson’s Kylie Kochis will face Mia Gorman of Bethel Park.

In 3A doubles, Ella Tunnell and Sophia Ming will meet Jenna Bell (12) and Carolina Walters of Greater Latrobe in the first round.

Seniors Leena Kwak and Ananya Krishnan of Conestoga take on Sam Becker and Nabiah Bhatti of McDowell of District 10.

College Men’s Basketball

MIGHTY MACS ARE SEVENTH IN POLL » After a one-game season in the spring of 2021, the Immaculata men’s basketball team is set to return to Alumnae Hall as they begin the 2021-22 campaign. The Mighty Macs were voted seventh in the recent Atlantic East Preseason poll, will open its season on Friday as they host Keystone College at 7 p.m.

IMMACULATA PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH » The Atlantic East Conference announced its preseason women’s basketball coaches’ poll and the Mighty Macs women’s basketball team was voted fourth overall in the conference.

In the abbreviate­d Spring 2020 season, the Mighty Macs played two games against Gwynedd Mercy in a home-and-home series, dropping the matches 89-80 and 80-73. Returning graduate student Theresa Kearney led the Mighty Macs in scoring over the two games, scoring 57 points and recording 17 rebounds.
