Documentary Film

Phoenixville Public Library will host a screening and discussion of a short documentary film, “Rediscovering Pennsylvania’s History Makers: Lucretia Mott,” on Monday, March 13, at 6:45 PM. The discussion will be led by David Atkinson of the Susquehanna Valley Center for Public Policy. When she passed away, Lucretia Mott was said to be the most wellknown woman in America. Despite her intrepid advocacy for abolition and women’s rights, she has largely faded from public recognition over generations. Small in stature, she was quite large in courage and fortitude, going places and breaking traditions that barred the voice and even the presence of a woman. Learning about and understanding Lucretia Mott is key to unlocking pivotal events and driving causes in Pennsylvania history, which still resonate today. David Atkinson spent 35 years working in the state Senate, most of that time for Sen. Robert C. Jubelirer. He has a B.A. and M.S. from Shippensburg University. Always a history nerd/buff, doing documentaries is something he discovered to entertain himself in semi-retirement. He is a member of various museums and spends time each year touring battlefields and historical sites. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required at https:// ccls.libcal.com/calendar/ Phoenixville/lucretiamott-film or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. For more information, email Mark Pinto, the Library’s Adult Services Director, at mpinto@ccls.org. Phoenixville Public Library is located at 183 Second Avenue, Phoenixville.

Book Club

The Phoenix Book Club, Phoenixville Public Library’s virtual book discussion group for adults of all ages, will meet Monday, March 13 at 7:00 PM. The group will discuss “Stoner” by John Williams. In this 20th-century American classic, William Stoner is born at the end of the 19th century into a dirt-poor farming family. Sent to the university to study agronomy, he instead embraces English literature and becomes an academic. Stoner experiences many disappointments — estrangement from his family, a stalled career, a cold marriage. Even his daughter — the light of his life — turns from him as solitude becomes his refuge. A physical or audiobook copy of this title may be reserved at www.ccls.org. An eBook copy may be reserved at https://chester.overdrive. com. The public is invited to attend. If you are not already on the Book Club’s e-mail list, registration is required at https://ccls.libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville/stoner or by calling 610-933-3013 x132 to receive an invitation to this Zoom event. The group will discuss “Children of Men” (2006, Rated R). Julianne Moore, Clive Owen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor star in this award-winning scifi drama. In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea. Please watch the film independently prior to the discussion. This event is free and open to the public and will be held online via Zoom.
