Books on Tap

Books on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s book discussion group for 20and 30-something adults, will meet at Rebel Hill Brewing Company, 242 Bridge St., Phoenixville, on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:00 PM. The group will discuss “Ninth House” by Leigh Bardugo. Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. In fact, by age 20, she is the sole survivor of horrific, unsolved multiple homicides. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most prestigious universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her? Still searching for answers, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. Their eight windowless “tombs” are the well-known haunts of the rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street’s biggest players. But their occult activities are more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And, sometimes, they prey on the living. Copies of the book and audiobook may be reserved at www. ccls.org. eBook and eAudiobook copies may be reserved at https://chester. overdrive.com. This event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Email Christine Shaffer at shaffer.m.christine@gmail. com for more information.

Book signing

Phoenixville Public Library will host a talk and book signing by local authors Nancy Schwartz and April Beard on Thursday, March 30 at 6:45 PM. Their new book is “Up Bow, Down Bow: A Child with Down Syndrome and His Journey to Master the Cello.” When fourth-grader Alex Schwartz first met his cello, his eyes lit up with wonder and a smile appeared on his face as bright as the potential his new cello teacher saw within him. The cello positively impacted all aspects of his development including focus, fine motor and gross motor skills. Through the transformative power of music, Alex’s voice sings through his cello in songs of joy, determination and strength. “Up Bow Down Bow” shares the beauty of his ongoing musical journey and tells of the vital teamwork between a young music teacher with an endless belief in the abilities of her students, and a mother with ceaseless love, support and hope for her son who has Down syndrome, epilepsy and hypotonia. More information on the book can be found at https://upnotdownbook. com. Books will be available for purchase at the event. This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person. Registration is required at https://ccls. libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville/up-bow-down-bow or by calling 610-933-3013 x132.
