Schumann tosses no-hitter for D-East in 8-0 victory

Rachel Schumann tossed a no-hitter and had two hits and an RBI as Downingtow­n East cruised to an 8-0 victory over West Chester East in a Ches-Mont League National Division softball contest Tuesday.

Schumann struck out 12 and alked three.

Sam Wendig had two singles and a double and drove in two. Steph Allessandr­o and Lucia Giuliano collected a pair of hits each. PENNRIDGE 15. COATESVILL­E 6>> Maddie Carpenter had two hits, including a tworun homer and Caitlyn Reynolds added a double as the Red Raiders fell in the nonleague contest.

College Baseball

IMMACULATA 20, TCNJ 7 >> Immaculata routed The College of New Jersey, 20-7, in a non-conference matchup. The offense came out on fire, taking an eight-run lead in the first inning. Batting around in the inning, Josh Crowding, Steven Theisen, Ryan Struble, Justin Klemick, Jay Lawrence and Joey Wright all drove in runs. They would add one more run in the 2nd, another in the 4th, and four more in the 5th inning. In the 6th, they would bring five more runs across the plate. Ryan Struble would round out the scoring with a 7th-inning sacrifice fly. Matthew Long picked up the first win of his collegiate career on the mound, coming into the ball game in relief and going four innings with four strikeouts, surrenderi­ng just two hits in his appearance.

Softball

IMMACULATA 6, SWARTHMORE 4; SWARTHMORE 8, IMMACULATA 2 >>

The Immaculata softball team (8-9, 1-2 Atlantic East) earned a split in their doublehead­er with Swarthmore on Tuesday afternoon. Immaculata won game one, 6-4, and Swarthmore took game two, 8-2. Immaculata pitcher Courtney Gable (3-1) earned the win, pitching seven innings allowing four earned runs and recorded three strikeouts. Gable helped her own cause in the bottom of the fourth inning when she doubled to right center scoring Steph Kelly to put Immaculata ahead to stay 4-3. After falling behind 3-0 in the first two innings, Immaculata evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning. Carlee Karcher scored on an error, Kristin Carter scored Rylee Martin on a fielder’s choice, and Bryele Anthony doubled to left field scoring Kaitlyn Carter. In the fourth inning, Immaculata took the lead on Courtney Gable’s double to right center. Immaculata would add on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take game one 6-4.

In game two, Swarthmore got things going early scoring three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0.

Immaculata would respond in the bottom of the second inning as Peyton McGowan, Alyssa Daly, and Kristin Carter all drew walks. Bryele Anthony hit a ground ball that the second baseman misplayed, then committed a throwing error that allowed Peyton McGowan and Alyssa Daly to score to pull the Macs back to within one run down 3-2. Swarthmore would respond scoring two runs in the top of the third inning to increase their lead to 5-2. The Garnet would add two runs in the fourth inning, and one more in the fifth inning to lead 8-2. The game was ended after five innings due to darkness.
