Teachers have impact beyond the classroom

As a parent of three teenagers, I, like many of you, often find myself as a chauffeur, shuttling kids to and from various school and extracurricular activities. This ‘window time’ offers a unique opportunity to listen to their conversations and unfiltered thoughts and experiences.

As we approach the final month of another school year, I am energized after hearing the conversations on a recent trip, as many discussions centered around their teachers.

Yes, on a Sunday afternoon when their thoughts could be anywhere but school, the carload of five middle- and highschool students chose to talk about classes, upcoming projects and, most importantly, their teachers. They spoke about the challenges of their schedules, the rigor of certain classes, upcoming research papers, pending PSSA and Keystone Exams, and even summer preseason workouts.

While the previously mentioned learning experiences and assessments don’t seem energizing or exciting to most, these students spoke about them with energy and laughter. Mixed into discussions on these topics were snippets of impactful moments their teachers have created for them this school year: How they made them feel, the experiences they created, and the opportunities for the students to build confidence and find success.

As I listened to a ninthgrader share advice to an eighth-grader on navigating their first year in high school, she paused midsentence and explained that she learned this year that her attitude, preparation and consistent effort ensure she is ready each day.

They continued to talk about the need to do their best in everything they commit to. These skills, described by a 15-year-old, were taught by one of her teachers. As she transitions from high school to the next stage of her academic journey, she will learn tjat these habits of mind will support her educational goals, and, more importantly, serve her well in her future career, relationships and life. A passionate educator fully committed to inspiring her to be her best, in and outside the classroom, made this moment possible.

As we approach Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10), let’s celebrate and honor our teachers’ incredible impact on our communities. Let us recognize the sacrifices they make, the dedication they show, and the lasting legacy they leave in the hearts and minds of their students. Let us advocate for policies and programs that support and uplift our educators, ensuring they have the resources, support, and recognition they need to thrive.

To all the great teachers, thank you for your unwavering dedication, boundless compassion, and belief in every child’s potential. You are the heart and soul of our education system, and your impact reverberates far beyond the confines of the classroom. Today and every day, we celebrate you!
