With demand for affordable housing for older residents on the rise, the City of Glendale hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Citrus Crossing, a projected apartment project for seniors, on Tuesday.

The Glendale Housing Authority, in partnership with Meta Housing Corporation, worked to bring the 127-unit rental senior housing project together. The project will stand at 900 E. Broadway in Glendale and is intended for people 62 and older.

Glendale Mayor Paula Devine said of the project: “We need to build af- fordable housing; we have a lot of peo- ple that need it, especially seniors, we know that. So we try to make sure we have housing as much as we can for all of them.”

The city has provided a total of $15.05 million in subsidies to develop the project, designed to house seniors earning between 30-70% of the area's median income.

The five-story 142,550-square-foot development will feature open courtyards, indoor and outdoor residential amenity spaces, onsite management and programs, a pedestrian paseo and two levels of underground parking.

The need for affordable housing is great, and Glendale plans on more projects to help fill the demand in the city.

“This is just the beginning for Glendale because we have two more projects planned, and we will have an additional 380 units after this one, so this is just the beginning of our affordable housing explosion,” said Devine.

Glendale City Manager Roubik Golanian echoed the importance of affordable housing. “This is going to be a huge improvement in the number of affordable units that the city can provide to our residents. As you can imagine, with the cost of housing so high, this will be welcome news to our residents, especially the seniors.”
