High temperatures in the Inland Empire are expected to persist through the rest of the week before the area cools slightly next week, forecasters said Wednesday.

Highs in Riverside and Ontario will remain about 95 degrees from today through Sunday. San Bernardino will be slightly hotter, reaching about 9899 degrees during that same period.

Western Riverside County and southwest San Bernardino County are expected to have an excessive heat warning today and Friday, when temperatures in the lower desert like the Coachella Valley could reach 113 to 116 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The High Desert will experience slightly lower highs, closer to 100 to 105 degrees.

A shift is expected toward the end of the weekend, cooling things down and possibly bringing monsoonallike rains on Sunday. Showers are expected for the desert and mountains and could continue into midweek. The increase of moisture to the desert will mean slightly lower maximum temperatures.

The showers also may hit western Los Angeles County into Ventura County by Tuesday or Wednesday.

In Orange County, Anaheim already received a fraction of a inch of unseasonable rainfall Monday.

A marine layer will protect coastal cities from the extreme heat. A high surf advisory will remain in effect until today for 4- to 8-foot swells. The San Clemente basin buoy continues to report a 5-foot swell every 13 to 17 seconds. The swell will bring surf of three to six feet today and Friday, with the biggest swells at southern beaches.
