Geology students to study underwater volcanos

A group of undergraduate geology students from Cal State Long Beach will soon take what they learned in the classroom and apply it to real scientific research — in a first-of-its-kind trip for CSULB.

The students will hop on a boat in February for a 30day research cruise near the Hawaiian Islands to help answer questions about tectonic plate movement in the Pacific Ocean and uncover the age of underwater volcanoes, among other objectives.

“It's a great way to get hands-on experience and learn as many skills as we possibly can while still in undergrad,” said Candice De Anda, a fourth-year geology major who will go on the trip.

The research project is led by Andrea Balbas, a geology assistant professor at CSULB, who is experienced in researching ancient volcanoes in the Hawaiian Archipelago. This is the first such trip CSULB students have taken for marine geology, Balbas said.

Balbas' research interests include geochronology,

Navigate Pasadena's streets like a seasoned local even as roads are closed in preparation for the 134th Rose Parade won't be easy. Your best bet is to anticipate delays and plan ahead if you will be anywhere near the 5 ½-mile parade route.

Road closures for this year's parade will start Jan. 1, New Year's Day. If you're driving in the area for the parade or the game, steer clear of Colorado Boulevard beginning at 10 p.m. Jan. 1 through the end of the staging and clean-up following parade festivities Jan. 2.

Route closures will be in effect through Colorado Boulevard, from Orange Grove Boulevard to Sierra Madre Boulevard and northbound on Sierra Madre to Paloma Street.
