Jon Ellinghouse, Sierra Canyon
Jon Ellinghouse and his staff, specifically the assistants that helm the defense, did a remarkable job turning Sierra Canyon’s season around. The Trailblazers (10-5) started the season 1-3 before being 2-4 more than halfway through it, including lopsided losses to Oaks Christian and Mission Viejo.
Sierra Canyon, which finished the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the area by the Daily News, won eight straight games en route to the Mission League title in its first year and the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship, holding Inglewood to its lowest scoring total all season long.
“We found our niche on the back half of the season and we relied on that,” Ellinghouse said of the turnaround. “Everyone focuses on offense, but our defense and the defensive coaches had a great year. I’m incredibly proud of the defense and the way we ran the ball in the playoffs. That wins championships.”
