DOWN THE STRETCH

▪ One of the most interesting races of California Cup day Saturday at Santa Anita is the $150,000 Sprint, which will feature The Chosen Vron and Brickyard Ride, two of the most popular Cal-breds in recent years. In their only head-tohead matchup, The Chosen Vron got the best of Brickyard Ride by 5 1⁄2 lengths in the Thor’s Echo Stakes at Santa Anita on May 28. “These are two of the best Cal-breds we’ve seen in a long time,” The Chosen Vron’s trainer, Eric Kruljac, told Santa Anita publicity. “It should be fun.” Said Brickyard Ride’s trainer Craig Lewis: “The Chosen Vron is a beast. He is going to be difficult to beat.”

▪ The California Cup is made up of five stakes races worth a total of $900,000 restricted to horses bred or sired in California. In addition to the Sprint, the Cal Cup includes a trio of $200,000 races — the Derby, the Oaks and the

Unusual Heat Turf Classic. The fifth race on the card is the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint run over Santa Anita’s famed downhill turf course. The Derby drew a short field of five, led by the Peter Miller-trained

Last Call London. The Stay Thirsty gelding goes into the 1 1⁄16-mile race off a neck victory over Stolen Treasure, also part of the field, in the King Glorious Stakes.

▪ Churchill Downs announced this week it is raising the purse for the Kentucky Derby from $3 million to $5 million, making it the second-richest thoroughbred race in North America behind only the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. “They put it up there where it belongs, huh?” the Bloodhorse quoted Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas as saying. Lukas has won America’s most famous horse race four times. “I think that the Breeders’ Cup Classic and (Derby) should be the two largest races in the country.” This year’s Derby, the 150th running, will be held May 4.
