Chicharito heading back to Chivas

- Staff, news service reports — Damian Calhoun

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is heading home and joining Chivas in Mexico's Liga MX. The move was announced on Wednesday morning.

Hernandez, who spent the past four seasons with the Galaxy, started his soccer career with Chivas of Guadalajara in 2006.

“My home, my family, my team, my everything,” Hernandez said in an Instagram post. “See you soon!”

Hernandez, 35, made his debut for Chivas' first team on Sept. 9, 2006, and he eventually made 64 appearances, scoring 26 goals before leaving to join Manchester United and embarking on his European career.

After leaving Chivas in 2010, he moved from Manchester United to Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham United and Sevilla. Hernandez then made the move to Major League Soccer, joining the Galaxy.

The first and last years of his Galaxy career were marred by injury. In 2020, he made just 12 appearances and scored only two goals. Last season, he made only nine appearances and scored one goal after suffering an ACL injury.

The middle two seasons were what could be described as “classic” Chicharito years. In 2021, he scored 17 goals in 21 games, and in 2022 he had 18 goals in a full season (34 games).

Hernandez departed the Galaxy after last season with his contract expiring.

He's still the leading goal scorer for the Mexican national team (52 goals), but he has not made a national team appearance since 2019.

• Joe Barry is out as the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator after a turbulent third season on the job that ended with a loss in the NFC divisional round of the playoffs.

Green Bay ranked 10th in points allowed per game (20.6), 17th in yards allowed per game (335.1) and 23rd in yards allowed per play (5.4) during the regular season with a defense featuring eight former first-round draft picks.

That included a brutal three-game stretch late in the season when the Packers allowed 29.3 points per game while going 1-2 against the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers.

The defense performed much better the rest of the season.

Green Bay allowed just one touchdown over its final two regular-season games. The Packers then held the Dallas Cowboys scoreless until the final play of the first half in a 48-32 wild-card victory.

But the Packers did allow 25 second-half points to the Cowboys and couldn't protect a fourth-quarter lead in a 24-21 divisional-round loss at San Francisco, when the 49ers drove 69 yards and scored the winning touchdown with 1:07 remaining.

This marked Barry's third stint as an NFL defensive coordinator. He had filled that role with Detroit in 2007-08 and Washington in 2015-16. Barry and LaFleur had worked together as Rams assistants in 2017. at Detroit New York Boston at Tampa Bay at Carolina at Dallas at Minnesota at Calgary at Edmonton
