Bring supplies to grieving family

It is customary, particularly in small communities, to take food to a family who recently had a loved one pass away. I have another suggestion to add onto this:

Also take paper goods, such as toilet paper, paper plates and cups, as well as disposable silverware. This will make it easier for the family to deal with visitors. Ice and garbage bags are useful, too. We often don't think of these things, but they are really appreciated.

DEAR HELOISE >> When we turn on the shower, we have to wait until the water gets warm, so we catch the cold water in the shower by using an empty 5-gallon bucket. We usually get between

1-3 gallons. Then we either put it into a rain barrel or use it to water our outdoor plants. Better to use it than let it go down the drain!

>> Regarding gift cards, it's best to buy them directly from the retailer, not from an unknown site. Check the card before purchasing them to make sure that the codes on the back of the card have not been scratched off to show the PIN number.

Make sure to also read the gift card's fine print. Know the terms and conditions. Is there an expiration date? Are there fees to use the card? Are there fees if the card is not used by a certain period of time?

DEAR HELOISE >> Too often, I've seen neighbors frantically looking around for a visiting dog. The animal usually slips out the door and gets loose in unfamiliar territory. So, when a dog visits my house, I immediately attach a long, masking-tape “flag” that sticks up on the back of its collar. With bold black marker, I write on the flag: “Fido is visiting. Please call this number if found.”

Since some animals aren't always approachable, make sure that the phone number is readable from a few feet away.

DEAR HELOISE >> I put soap bits in a small glass jar with a lid, then add water to cover them. I set this aside until it liquifies; it will be on the thicker side. With a funnel, I then pour this into a container with a pump. This will take some time and patience, but you'll have an ongoing supply of liquid hand soap.
