Va. sees 851 new coronaviru­s cases

Hampton Roads, Norfolk see big increases

The Virginia Department of Health reported 851 new coronaviru­s cases Saturday, bringing the state’s total to 69,782.

Saturday ’s numbers were down nearly 100 from the previous day’s report, when state health department officials announced 943 new cases, the biggest single day tally in more than a month.

Of the total cases in the state, 66,963 are confirmed and 2,819 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomati­c and have a known exposure to the illness.

At least 1,962 Virginians have died from the virus as of Saturday morning, up four from Friday.

Throughout the state, there have been 7,167 cases in long-term care facilities, and 1,173 deaths, according to the health department’s data.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive PCR tests was listed at 6.7%, up slightly from the 6.3% the day before. Virginia reported17,627 new PCR tests were performed, bringing the total to 783,516.

The number of people hospitaliz­ed for COVID-19 is 1,020, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Associatio­n. Of those, 655 have confirmed cases and 365 are awaiting test results. So far, 9, 2 71 COVID-19 patients have been discharged. As of Friday morning, 21% of the state’s ventilator­s are in use.

In Hampton Roads, Norfolk saw another big increase in new cases, with 88 new cases on Saturday, after having recorded 71 on Friday and 95 on Thursday. Virginia Beach saw 96 new cases after a record-setting 116 on Friday.

0-9: 2,336 cases, 0 deaths The VDH did not report ages for 744 cases and two deaths.

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 35,196 women have had cases and 968 have died, while 34,140 men have had cases and 987 have died. Of the state tally, 446 cases don’t have a reported sex and 7 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
