Va. Beach sees record daily high

- By Sean Kennedy Staff writer

Virginia health officials announced Saturday another 1,245 new coronavirus cases and eight new deaths from COVID-19.

In Virginia Beach, 329 new cases were reported, which set a single-day high.

The city also reported two additional deaths. Virginia Department of Health officials said Saturday’s “spike” in cases was due to a delay in data entry: “The rapid increase in cases in Virginia Beach led to a delay in the data being entered into the state case reporting system.

The number is increased due to data entry, not a one day spike.”

Chesapeake and Portsmouth also set single-day highs for new cases on Saturday with 126 and 60, respectively.

The previous high for Virginia Beach was 157 new cases reported July 13, according to VDH data.

Chesapeake’s previous high was set Friday with 86 new cases. Portsmouth’s previous high was 53 cases reported a week ago.

In total, the number of cases in the state — 83,609 — includes confirmed cases (80,480) and probable cases (3,129). Probable cases are those patients who are symptomatic and have had a known exposure to the virus.

As of Saturday morning, a total of 2,075 people had died of the illness, VDH data shows. Virginia’s longterm care facilities have seen 7,767 cases and 1,201 deaths.

A total of 1,007,314 tests had been performed in the state as of Saturday, an increase of 20,126 new tests from the previous day, according to health officials.

The seven-day percentage of positive tests remained steady on Saturday at 7.5%.

Some 1,201 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state as of Saturday — including 785 confirmed cases and 416 awaiting test results, according to figures from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association. A total of 10,800 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from Virginia hospitals. On Friday morning, 20% of the state’s ventilators were being used.
