W&M to return to play on Monday

The William & Mary men’s basketball team, which only has been able to play one game because of coronaviru­s concerns, finally knows when it can return.

The Tribe announced that it has reschedule­d its game with George Washington. The Tribe and Colonials will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at GW’s Smith Center, and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.

The teams originally were to play Dec. 5, but the game was postponed after the Tribe program paused activities due to a positive COVID-19 case in the program Nov. 29.

W&M’s only game so far was an 86-78 loss at Old Dominion on Nov. 28.

Saturday’s games:

Notre Dame 64, Kentucky 63

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Nate Laszewski scored 21 points, Notre Dame put Kentucky (1-4) into a historic first-half deficit, and the Irish (2-3) held on for their firstever victory in Lexington.

The Fighting Irish used a 19-0 run in the first half to open a

33-9 lead and were up 48-26 at the half. It was the largest halftime deficit in a home game in Kentucky’s history.

Olivier Sarr missed an open 15-footer from the right wing with a second left, and Devin Askew was too late flying in from the left for a putback.

No. 12 Tennessee 65, Cincinnati 56

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — John Fulkerson had 15 points and 12 rebounds, helping Tennessee (2-0) pull away late in the second half against Cincinnati (2-2).

No. 16 UNC 73, N.C. Central 67

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Richmond-area native Armando Bacot had 19 points and 11 rebounds, as North Carolina stopped a two-game slide by holding off North Carolina Central.

Caleb Love and Day’Ron Sharpe scored 12 points apiece for the Tar Heels (4-2), and Andrew Platek finished with 11.

Fla. Gulf Coast 66, Miami 62

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Caleb Catto scored 18 points, Dakota Rivers 15 and each hit key baskets as Florida Gulf Coast (3-1) upset injury-plagued Miami (3-1). Miami lost guard Kameron McGusty and center Rodney Miller Jr. to leg injuries early in the game, leaving the Hurricanes with six healthy scholarshi­p players.

Syracuse 101, Boston College 63

BOSTON — Alan Griffin drained six 3-pointers and scored 22 points to go with 10 rebounds, Bubby Boeheim passed his dad/ coach on Syracuse’s career scoring list, and the Orange (4-1) routed the Eagles (1-5) in an

ACC opener. Boeheim, a junior, finished with 17 points, pushing him past Jim Boeheim’s 745 from his career that finished in 1966. Jim Boeheim is in his 45th year as the Syracuse coach.

No. 3 Iowa 105, Iowa State 77

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Luka Garza surged in the second half and finished with 34 points in just 17 minutes for the host Hawkeyes (5-0) against the Cyclones (1-2). The 6-foot-11 senior scored the most points by a Division I player who played less than 20 minutes in a game over the past 25 seasons, according to ESPN.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Norfolk Academy product David McCormack had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Ochai Agbaji scored 18 points for Kansas (6-1) in its final tune-up before Big 12 play.

WOMEN No. 3 UConn 79, UMass Lowell 23

STORRS, Conn. — Freshman Paige Bueckers scored 17 points in her Connecticu­t debut, and the third- Huskies romped Saturday.

The Huskies were just happy to get on the court after having four games canceled or postponed after a staff member in the program tested positive for the coronaviru­s. River Hawks coach Tom Garrick agreed to play this game when he was asked by his wife, UConn assistant coach Shea Ralph.
