Oklahoma State edges No. 6 Texas in double overtime

Cunningham makes up for earlier struggles by making shots in clutch

STILLWATER, Okla. — Touted freshman Cade Cunningham scored five of his 19 points in the second overtime, including a contested 3-pointer with 1:33 left, to help the Cowboys.

Keylan Boone led OSU with 22 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks, including two in the second overtime after Cunningham had staked the Cowboys to a 74-67 lead with the 3-pointer and two free throws. Avery Anderson added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Cowboys (12-5, 5-5 Big 12).

Andrew Jones had 17 points and Courtney Ramey 13 for the Longhorns (11-5, 5-4), who shot just 25% from the field (20 for 79) and had 21 turnovers. They hung around by forcing Oklahoma State into 35% shooting, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and coming up with 18 steals and six blocks.

Cunningham scored the final basket in regulation, a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to tie the score at 59. He missed another 3-pointer with four seconds left. He had two turnovers in the final minute of the first overtime, but swiped a Texas inbounds pass with four seconds left. But he missed a short floater in the lane and the game went to a second extra period.

Cunningham made just 5 of 22 shots from the field and committed six turnovers.

NORMAN, Okla. — Austin Reaves was back to his usual stat-stuffing ways.

Oklahoma’s scoring leader this season missed the previous two games while in COVID-19 protocols. He returned Saturday and had 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Sooners (12-5, 7-4 Big 12) handed the Cyclones (2-11, 0-8) their seventh straight loss.

Brady Manek, who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since being out with COVID-19, had nine points and a career-high 15 rebounds for Oklahoma.

No. 17 West Virginia 91, No. 23 Kansas 79

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Though former Norfolk Academy product David McCormack had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Jayhawks, the Mountainee­rs won as Miles McBride scored a career-high 29 points, while Taz Sherman had a career-best 25.

The Mountainee­rs (13-5, 6-3 Big 12) never trailed and got off to a good start in a challengin­g stretch where they will play six straight opponents that are currently ranked.

No. 25 Drake 80, Valparaiso 77

VALPARAISO, Ind. — Senior forward ShanQuan Hemphill, playing less than 20 miles from his hometown of Gary, Indiana, scored 18 points, including a dunk that jump-started a late 11-0 run and kept the Bulldogs unbeaten.

Hemphill was one of five Drake players in double figures as the Bulldogs improved to 18-0 this season. They are one of three remaining men’s Division I unbeaten teams in the country.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Kofi Cockburn scored 23 points, Ayo Dosunmu added 21 and the Illini won a key Big Ten matchup.

Dosunmu also had 12 rebounds and 12 assists for only the third triple-double in school history.

Cockburn grabbed 14 rebounds and recorded his eighth double-double in nine games for Illinois (13-5, 9-3).

D’Mitrik Trice scored 19 points and Nate Reuvers added 11 for Wisconsin (14-6, 8-5).

Illinois outrebound­ed the Badgers 46-18.

HOUSTON — Cameron Tyson and Houston (16-2) rebounded from their second loss, Wednesday at East Carolina, with a runaway victory against an overmatche­d NAIA school (1-4).

Mac McClung, from Gate City, Virginia, scored 23 points for the Red Raiders.

McClung, the Big 12’s leading scorer, is averaging 25 points in his last four road games and capped off the contest with a breakaway dunk in the final minute. Kevin McCullar added 15 and Kyler Edwards had 13 points for the Red Raiders (14-5, 6-4 Big 12).

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — T.J. Bickerstaf­f had 18 points and six assists for the Dragons (8-6, 3-4 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n), who held off Hofstra’s secondhalf rally.

Hampton High graduate Jalen Ray, a Hofstra senior, scored a career-high 30 points for the Pride (11-7, 7-4), the defending CAA champion, whose fivegame win streak ended.

DAYTON, Ohio — Jalen Crutcher had 21 points and Ibi Watson added 20 for the Flyers (11-5, 7-4 Atlantic 10), who earned their fourth straight home victory.

Jordan Miller had 16 points for the Patriots (8-8, 4-6).
